The Daily Drive Book ClubThe Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins & Sawyer Robbins | Part 1 of 2
Episode Summary
You asked, and we delivered! By popular demand, we're diving into The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins in the first of a two-part conversation.
Two little wordsβLet Themβand two very different perspectives! Vanessa and Yanet agree on the power of letting go of what you can't control, but they don't necessarily agree on how the message is delivered or how easy it is to put into practice.
In Part 1, we explore what it really means to let people be who they are while taking responsibility for our own choices. From managing emotions and navigating relationships to setting boundaries and supporting others without rescuing them, we share the lessons that resonated, the ones that didn't, and how these ideas show up in real life.
And just when the conversation turns to adult friendships and gets a little emotional...we leave you with a cliffhanger!

π The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever by Michael Bungay Stanier
Episode Summary
What if being a better leader meant talking less and asking better questions?
In this episode, we dig into The Coaching Habit and its deceptively simple challenge: stop jumping in with answers and help people find their own.
We break down the seven questions at the heart of the book, confront our own βAdvice Monsters,β and talk about what it actually takes to make coaching a habit instead of something you save for formal one-on-ones. And because this is real life, we also wrestle with the obvious question: Do we really have time to coach our way through every conversation?
The answer might be somewhere between βWhatβs the real challenge here for you?β and βPlease, just tell me what you need.β
In This Episode
Our Rating
β½ Gas Tank: 3/4
We both landed at three-quarters of a tank. The concept is focused and fairly simple β ask more questions and resist the urge to immediately give advice β but putting it into practice is much harder.
What makes this one worth the drive is how immediately usable it is. You leave with actual questions you can put to work Monday morning, whether you're leading a team, working with colleagues, or even talking with your adult kids.
Daily Drive tip: If you're picking up the book, look for the updated edition. Yanet got the longer version with additional real-life examples and conversations β and Vanessa is still bitter about it.

MINI EPISODE: Grit = Passion + Perseverance | Angela Duckworth's TED Talk | Discussion & Summary
Episode Summary
In this mini episode, Vanessa and Yanet step away from the big, complex books for a lighter but no less meaningful conversation β built around Angela Duckworth's classic 2013 TED Talk on grit. Yanet found the talk right as she headed back to school in her late 30s, and it named something she'd been living: grit as passion plus perseverance, a better predictor of success than IQ or raw talent. The hosts trade the story of how "Grit got me through it" ended up on Yanet's graduation cap, dig into how grit actually gets built, and trace the idea back to the research that came before it.

From the Peace Corps to a fifth-grade classroom to 27 years leading United Way Miami through hurricanes, growth, and reinvention, Harve shares the philosophy behind a lifetime of leadership: leading with people, requiring failure, getting out of the way, and making the call when the answer isn't clear.

Β π No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention by Reed Hastings and Erin MeyerΒ
Episode Summary
Vanessa and Yanet take on No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer β the strangest leadership book they've read yet. Netflix built a culture on radical trust: high talent density, top-of-market pay, freedom and responsibility, and radical candor. The hosts unpack what's genuinely inspiring, what's a little cutthroat, and what an average leader can actually take from a philosophy built for the 1%.
In This Episode
Gas Tank Rating: 2/4 β½β½
A powerhouse book with powerhouse ideas β but the half-tank reflects that so much of the Netflix model just isn't replicable for most teams. Worth the read for what you can apply.

π The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy
Episode Summary
Every once in a while, you have to step out of the heavy leadership books and just eat some cake. In this mini episode, Yanet leads us through a children's book handed to her by a CEO mentor during a hospital leadership program β a book that turned out to hold more leadership wisdom than either of us expected. Hand-illustrated and handwritten by the author, it's a story about kindness, optimism, and love. And on the second read, with a leadership lens, the themes started jumping off the page: circle of safety, asking questions instead of having answers, self-compassion, and building trust with people you're not used to trusting.

Our Rating
β½ Gas Tank: 4/4 β A full tank from both of us. A children's book that makes you stop, think, and give yourself (and everyone around you) a little grace. And it has cake.

π Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter by Liz Wiseman
Episode Summary
What's the difference between a leader who makes everyone around them smarter β and one who, often without even realizing it, makes people feel smaller? In this episode, we dig into Liz Wiseman's Multipliers, and we'll be honest: this one hit differently. It's the most concrete, actionable leadership book we've covered so far, and we're already putting it to work.
