  • 613 “Raised Up with Christ: Grace That Lifts Us”

Wednesday, October 8th: In Part 3, John explores the elevation of grace: not only are we forgiven—we are raised and seated with Christ in the heavenly realms. This is more than poetic language. In the Greco-Roman world, to be seated with a king meant sharing in his victory and authority. Paul is saying that by grace, believers now participate in Jesus’ resurrection and reign. John connects this to the First Nations Version’s phrase “the highest place in the spirit-world,” reminding listeners that salvation is not just about avoiding hell—it’s about new life and new status. Grace doesn’t merely patch us up; it enthrones us beside Jesus. John helps us imagine what it means to live today as people who already have one foot in heaven—bearing witness to God’s kingdom on earth as trophies of His grace.

  • 612 “But Because of His Great Love”

Tuesday, October 7th: In Part 2, John explores the turning point of the gospel: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.” Everything changes with that word—“but.” Against the backdrop of our sin and spiritual death, God’s love bursts through like light into darkness. John discusses how Paul ties God’s grace to His character—He doesn’t show mercy reluctantly but lavishly. Drawing on early church commentary and modern voices like C.K. Barrett and Marilynne Robinson, John shows that grace isn’t God changing His mind about us—it’s God being true to His loving nature. Grace is love in action. Even when we were dead, God loved us. That’s the heart of the gospel—grace doesn’t start with our repentance; it starts with God’s compassion.

  • 611 From Death to Life: The Story Grace Begins

Monday, October 6: In this first episode of our series on grace, John unpacks the grim reality that Paul begins with: “You were dead in your transgressions and sins.” This isn’t a metaphor for feeling bad—it’s a statement about spiritual lifelessness. John explores the first-century Jewish understanding of sin as missing the mark and being enslaved by spiritual powers. Paul’s audience, surrounded by pagan religion and Roman imperial propaganda, lived under the illusion of freedom but were spiritually dead. John contrasts this with modern life—how we too “follow the ways of the world,” driven by the cravings of the flesh and the ruler of the air. Yet, even here, grace’s story begins: God’s mercy doesn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up. We’re reminded that we don’t drift toward God; we’re rescued by Him. Grace isn’t a rescue mission we earn—it’s one that interrupts our lostness.

  • 610 Acts 16: The Power of Faith in Adversity and Transformation

Friday, Oct 3rd: In Episode 610, John Spencer and Mariza dive into the action-packed chapter of Acts 16, exploring Paul’s second missionary journey as he’s joined by Timothy in Lystra. Despite the Jerusalem Council ruling circumcision unnecessary for salvation, Paul circumcises Timothy to remove cultural barriers while ministering to Jews. The Holy Spirit redirects their plans, leading them into Macedonia, where Paul receives a vision of a man calling for help. In Philippi, they meet Lydia, a wealthy merchant of purple cloth, whose heart God opens to the gospel. She and her household are baptized, and her home becomes the first church in Europe. They later free a demon-possessed slave girl, angering her owners and landing Paul and Silas in prison. While chained in stocks, they choose joy and sing hymns, resulting in a divine earthquake that breaks their bonds. The Philippian jailer, witnessing their faith, asks how to be saved and believes in Jesus with his entire household. Paul asserts his Roman citizenship to protect the new believers, ensuring the church in Philippi begins with strength and stability.

  • 609 Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock

Thursday, October 2nd: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John unpacks the true meaning of Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” While often misused as an invitation for unbelievers to accept salvation, this verse is actually addressed to a church — to believers who have pushed Jesus outside through self-sufficiency and lukewarm faith. Exploring the historical context of Laodicea, John reveals how their wealth and pride made them blind to their spiritual bankruptcy. He shows that Jesus is not forcing His way in but patiently knocking, waiting for permission because love cannot be coerced. The message challenges us to open the door daily, inviting Jesus into every part of our lives, not just once at conversion. True intimacy with Christ means giving Him space to transform us — a process that may be painful but always leads to life. Will we let Him in?

  • 608 What Is the Mark of the Beast? (The Truth About Revelation 13)

Wednesday, October 1st: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John unpacks one of the most misunderstood passages in Scripture: the mark of the beast in Revelation 13. Too often, the mark is tied to microchips, barcodes, or conspiracy theories about technology, but the Bible points us in a very different direction. John explores the Old Testament background in Deuteronomy 6, where God’s Word was to be bound on the forehead and hands as a symbol of shaping thoughts and actions. Revelation presents the beast’s mark as a counterfeit to God’s seal—a question of loyalty, not a secret code. For the first Christians, the mark would have been understood as allegiance to Caesar, whose worship was required to survive socially and economically. Today, the same principle applies whenever we compromise our allegiance to Jesus for comfort, convenience, or acceptance. The forehead symbolizes what shapes our thinking, and the hand represents what drives our actions. Every person is already being marked—either by the Lamb or by the beast. But John closes with hope: those who belong to Jesus are already sealed with His Spirit, secure in their identity and future. The final word is not with the beast but with the Lamb, who wins and marks His people with victory.

  • 607 The Time Has Come: Living in the Kingdom Now

Tuesday, September 30th: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John explores Mark 1:15, the very first words of Jesus’ ministry in the Gospel of Mark: “The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” John explains the historical backdrop of Roman-occupied Israel, where expectations of a political Messiah collided with Jesus’ announcement of God’s reign breaking into history. He unpacks the key terms—kairos as God’s decisive moment, the nearness of the kingdom as God’s reign becoming present in Jesus, repentance as reorientation, and belief as trust and surrender.

Listeners will see how Jesus’ short proclamation encapsulates His entire mission: the long-awaited fulfillment of God’s promises. John highlights the difference between human kingdoms and God’s kingdom, showing how Jesus’ healings, forgiveness, and authority were signs of God’s reign breaking through. He challenges listeners to live with urgency, aligning their lives with God’s rule, practicing daily repentance, and trusting the good news in practical ways. This episode calls believers not just to hear Jesus’ words but to live them—embracing the reality that God’s kingdom is already at hand.

  • 606 Knowing Christ: Resurrection Power and Fellowship in Suffering

Monday, September 29th: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John explores Philippians 3:7–12 with a focus on verse 10: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death.” Paul, writing from prison, redefines success by declaring that everything he once valued is rubbish compared to knowing Christ. John unpacks the historical and cultural context of Philippi, where loyalty to Caesar clashed with the radical confession that “Jesus is Lord.” He explains how Paul longs not just for head knowledge of Christ, but for experiential, intimate knowledge rooted in both power and suffering.

Listeners will discover how resurrection power is not only for the future but available now to face weakness, fear, and hardship. John shares how suffering can be seen as fellowship with Christ, a way of being united with Him in life’s hardest moments. He challenges us to reflect on what we count as gain and to surrender those things for the sake of Christ. This passage becomes a call to redefine success, embrace suffering faithfully, and experience daily resurrection power. Ultimately, Paul’s words remind us that even he had not “arrived”—instead, he pressed on to take hold of Christ. This episode invites us to do the same: to press on in knowing Jesus above all else.
