  • 603 Canceling the Logic of Vengeance: Why Forgiveness Is the Way of Jesus

Wednesday, September 24: Forgiveness isn’t a default human instinct—it’s a scandalous gift Christianity handed to the West. In honor-based cultures from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Viking societies, vengeance and blood feuds were considered moral duties that restored honor and “balance.” Jesus shattered that cycle. In Matthew 18 He answers Peter’s question about limits with “seventy-seven times,” echoing and overturning Lamech’s boast of seventy-sevenfold vengeance in Genesis 4. Jesus then tells a parable where a servant, forgiven an impossible debt, refuses mercy over a small one—revealing the new logic: we forgive because God first forgave us. The early church learned to live this out, not by excusing evil, but by refusing to repay evil with evil and entrusting justice to God. This episode explores the historical backdrop of revenge, the biblical foundations of forgiveness, and practical rhythms for forgiving real people who have caused real wounds. We’ll clarify what forgiveness is—and what it is not—setting wise boundaries while choosing mercy. And we’ll end with a guided practice so you can take a first, honest step today.

  • 602 Love Your Enemies: Love. Do Good. Bless. Pray.

Tuesday, September 23rd: This episode dives into Jesus’ radical command in Luke 6:27–36 and explores how enemy-love moves from poetry to practice. We trace the Jewish roots of love of neighbor (Leviticus 19:18), highlight Hillel’s “negative Golden Rule,” and show how Jesus intensifies it into active, unconditional love—even for enemies—within a first-century landscape of Roman occupation. Drawing on historian David Flusser’s insight, we connect Jesus’ teaching to His embodied life and the cross, where blessing, prayer, and self-giving love reach their clearest expression. Along the way, we get practical with a four-step rhythm—Love, Do Good, Bless, Pray—and talk about wise boundaries, non-retaliation, and creative, dignifying responses that resist evil without mirroring it. Two everyday stories model what this looks like in family and ministry life. In a culture of contempt, the family resemblance of the Father shines when we love those who are hardest to love. Enemy-love isn’t passivity; it’s cruciform power that changes the air we all breathe.

  • 601 Changing the World Starts with Changing Me

Monday, September 22nd: When we look at the chaos in our world—wars, injustice, political division—it’s easy to ask, How can we change things? But in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus directs us to start not with “them,” but with ourselves. He begins with anger and contempt, showing that these are the root fuels for violence and destruction. Without them, history’s darkest chapters would never have happened. In this episode, we explore Jesus’ teaching to stop retaliating, to refuse judgment, and to first remove the plank from our own eyes. The real answer to the problem of evil is not outrage or control—it’s surrendering our will, present, and future to God. Change in the world begins with change in me.

  • 600 Living the Gospel Out Loud

Friday, September 19th: Acts 14 shows Paul and Barnabas living the gospel out loud in real places with real pushback. John and Mariza trace their route through Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe, unpacking the cultural backdrop that shaped how people heard and misunderstood miracles—like mistaking the apostles for gods. They highlight how discipleship isn’t just believing the right things but learning, practicing, and passing on the way of Jesus. The episode lingers on the tension we all feel: joy and hardship are not opposites; in God’s hands they often arrive together. We also see the holy courage of returning to hard places, strengthening new believers, and appointing leaders even under pressure. Pressure, they argue, can be a privilege—an invitation to grow, clarify our hope, and deepen resilience. By the end, Acts 14 becomes a mirror for our own lives: share Jesus plainly, endure opposition faithfully, keep investing in people, and let God use the hard to produce real growth.

  • 599 When Adequacy Kills Prayer: Learning Holy Dependence

Thursday, September 18th: This episode unpacks the truth that “as long as we feel adequate, we won’t pray as we should.” We explore how cultural self-reliance quietly chokes prayer and how Jesus’ words—“Blessed are the poor in spirit” and “Apart from me you can do nothing”—reframe prayer as oxygen, not ornament. Through Luke 18’s Pharisee and tax collector, Revelation 3’s Laodicea, and stories of Jehoshaphat, the desperate father, and Moses, we see how acknowledged weakness becomes a runway for God’s power. We name the subtle ways adequacy dresses up as responsibility or false humility. The episode offers a practical path into a praying life: morning poverty, breath-prayers, praying Scripture, mealtime/commute intercession, a daily “mini-Gethsemane,” quick confession, an “impossibilities list,” and an evening examen. We emphasize presence over performance, wisdom over hurry, and power over polish. A brief guided prayer helps listeners renounce self-reliance and receive holy dependence. Listeners are encouraged to make prayer a practiced posture, not an emergency brake. The takeaway: weakness isn’t the barrier to prayer—pretended adequacy is.

  • 598 The Great Commission: Apprenticeship to Jesus

Wednesday, September 17th: Jesus’ Great Commission centers on one clear command: make disciples, not just decisions. In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus roots that mission in His authority, explains the method—going as we go, baptizing into the Triune Name, and teaching people to obey—and promises His constant presence. Dallas Willard called out the church’s “great omission”: celebrating professions of faith while neglecting apprenticeship that actually trains people to do what Jesus said. Scripture paints a full picture of discipleship: abiding in Jesus’ word (John 8:31–32), becoming like the Teacher (Luke 6:40), loving Him through obedience (John 14:15,23), sharing His life now (John 17:3), practicing together in community (Acts 2:42), and walking in good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:8–10). Disciple-making is an everyday calling—“as you go”—woven into the ordinary places we already inhabit: homes, workplaces, schools, and online spaces. Grace doesn’t cancel effort; it fuels training with Jesus so His life becomes our new normal. We begin with a simple pathway—Vision, Intention, Means—cooperating with the Spirit through practices that form us into people who naturally do what Jesus taught. The Sermon on the Mount gives practical content for “everything I commanded,” from reconciling quickly to trusting the Father instead of hoarding. Common obstacles—feeling unqualified, too busy, afraid to fail, or worried about being “weird”—are met by Jesus’ promise: “I am with you always.” Ultimately, disciple-making immerses people into the shared life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—a life we don’t just defend with words but actually live inside.

  • 597 Things Jesus Never Said

Tuesday, September 16th: Jesus may be the most quoted—and misquoted—voice in history, and today we trade popular Christian clichés for the real words and ways of Jesus. We start with “God helps those who help themselves,” showing how the gospel offers grace to the helpless and how Jesus seeks and saves the lost (Luke 19:10) while Paul insists salvation is gift, not achievement (Eph. 2:8–9). We face our tendency to downplay sin, remembering that Jesus is gentle with sinners yet refuses to minimize the gravity of sin—grace first, then transformation (John 8:11). We contrast karma’s tidy payback with the scandal of grace, where people receive mercy they never earned and justice is satisfied at the cross. We realign prayer away from formulas and toward the Father’s will, looking at Gethsemane—the “oil press”—where Jesus prays, “Not my will but Yours.” We reset expectations about discipleship: Jesus promises presence and purpose, not an easy life, and calls us to take up our cross. We also address God’s timing in prayer—He hears, but answers with wisdom, not on-demand delivery. Finally, we take seriously Jesus’ exclusive claim to be the way to the Father (John 14:6), sharing truth with gentleness and respect while inviting anyone and everyone to come. The whole episode is an invitation to read Jesus in context, repent of slogans, and follow the real Savior with a humble, trusting heart.

  • 596 Not Afraid: Prayer, Presence & Peacemaking

Monday, September 15th: Fear and anger feel like the loudest voices in our cultural moment, but Jesus speaks with a steadier cadence: “Do not be afraid… take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). This episode explores what it means to reject panic without denying reality, living as people shepherded by Jesus in the same world everyone else inhabits. We look at how worry “pulls the mind apart” (the sense behind merimnaō in Matthew 6) and how Jesus patiently gathers us back under the Father’s care. Philippians 4:6–7 gives us a pathway rather than a pep talk—bringing specific fears to God in thankful prayer so His peace stands guard over our hearts and minds. John shares a recent family moment where anxiety wanted control, but a brief prayerful pause changed the tone and outcome. Psalm 23 reframes peace as the presence of the Shepherd in the valley, not the absence of valleys. We introduce a simple, repeatable P.R.A.Y. practice—Pause, Recenter, Ask, Yield—for when fear spikes. Then we move outward: Jesus makes us peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), people who carry holy calm into anxious conversations online and off. 1 Peter 3:15 shapes our posture—truth with gentleness and respect—as we answer a panic culture with the presence of Christ. The invitation: don’t match the volume of fear; walk closely with the Shepherd and make peace.

  • 594 How Do We Know God? Learning Christ in a Noisy World

Thursday, September 11th: In Episode 594, we ask a simple but life-changing question: How do we actually know God, not just know about Him? We explore the gospel as the good, true, and real knowledge of God—God making Himself known in Jesus through the Spirit, not a slogan or a single doctrine. Walking slowly through Ephesians 4:17–24, we unpack Paul’s invitation to “learn Christ,” a relational kind of knowing that reshapes our minds, habits, and hopes. Paul’s rhythm—“put off… be renewed… put on”—shows both a decisive new identity in Christ and the daily renovation of the Spirit. We warn against two common reductions of the gospel: doctrines-only (passing the test but missing the Person) and activism-only (pursuing justice while unplugged from the Vine). Instead, we hold together orthodoxy, orthopraxy, and a renewed heart as the fruit of truly knowing God. Along the way, we remember that Jesus is the living Logos, the center of Scripture, and the One who reveals the Father’s heart in word and deed. Practically, we offer five simple steps this week—read Ephesians 4 out loud, name an “old self” reflex, sit with a gospel story, keep Scripture in your pocket before your phone, and check in with a trusted friend. The episode closes with a prayer for renewed minds and a gentle invitation to keep turning toward Jesus. In a noisy world, the way forward isn’t more volume; it’s learning the Person who is the truth.
