The Alter Rebbe himself served as the Torah reader.
Once he was not in Liozna for Shabbos Parshas [Ki] Savo, and
the Mitteler Rebbe heard
— at that time a boy before bar-mitzvah —
the Torah Reading from another person.
He experienced such distress upon hearing the curses in the tocheichah
that on Yom Kippur, the Alter Rebbe was unsure whether [his son] would be able to fast.
When the Mitteler Rebbe was asked [to explain the severity of his response], for after all, this same passage is read every year,
he replied: “When my father reads it, they do not sound like curses.”

On this teaching, the Alter Rebbe offered the following interpretation:
The Sages teach: “Whoever sustains one Jewish soul is considered as if he had sustained an entire world.”
When we see a fellow Jew,
we should behold him in the [pristine spiritual] state in which he is conceived in the Primeval Thought of Adam Kadmon.
On that level, the soul exists
together with all the generations that will emerge from it
until the coming of Mashiach, our righteous redeemer.
Thus, when we do a Jew a favor,
we do a favor for all those souls until the end of all the generations.

[Today is the anniversary of] the founding of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim (the Central Lubavitcher Yeshivah),
on Sunday, 15 Elul, 5657 (1897).
Actual study in both nigleh (the revealed realm of the Torah) and Chassidus
began on Wednesday, Chai Elul, 5657 (1897).
After the Hakkafos on the night of Simchas Torah, 5659 (1898),
my father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] announced:
“The name of the Yeshivah is Tomchei Temimim,
and the students who study and conduct themselves in its spirit are called temimim.”

A directive of my revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab]:
“To take the offensive in battle should be shunned to the utmost —
not because we lack the wherewithal to be victorious,
nor because we are faint of heart,
but because all our energy should be dedicated solely to fortifying our edifice,
the edifice of the Torah and its mitzvos, with holiness and purity.
We should dedicate our souls to this goal with actual — not merely theoretical — self-sacrifice.”

Reb Hendel related:
“It was well known among chassidim
that their first yechidus removed the foreskin [of the heart].
Whatever else might happen,
one was immediately rid of the heart’s foreskin.”

The long series of maamarim entitled BeShaah SheHikdimu 5672 [1912]
[The Rebbe Rashab] began delivering on the first day of Shavuos of that year in Lubavitch,
and completed its delivery on Shabbos Parshas Vayeira, 5676 (1916), in Rostov,
with the maamar entitled VaHavayah Amar HaMechaseh Ani MeiAvraham.
It comprises 144 maamarim.
The manuscripts [of the Rebbe Rashab] include a second part which was never delivered orally and which is not divided into individual discourses.

On Shabbos Parshas [Ki] Seitzei, 5603 (1843),
at the daytime Shabbos meal,
the Tzemach Tzedek said:
“This World is a world of falsehood.
Therefore, even the good is mixed with dross
and requires refinement working upwards from below and working downwards from above.
[By contrast,] the World to Come is the World of Truth.
Thus, even when the Torah discusses issues that appear to be shortcomings,
when studied in Gan Eden they are [understood as] positive qualities.”
He began to sing a niggun and motioned that those around him should join him.
His sons began, and then all the chassidim joined in the heart-stirring melody.
When it came to an end, the Tzemach Tzedek said [by way of example]:
“There is a Talmudic phrase, ‘One who studies Torah lifrakim’ (Sanhedrin 99b).
In our material world, this phrase means ‘one who studies Torah from time to time.’
In Gan Eden, it is understood
as referring to one who studies the Torah and the Torah takes him apart.
The words of the Torah permeate his very being.”

The vintage chassidim of the Alter Rebbe
would offer [three] interpretations of the word yechidus:
(a) clarifying;
(b) designating [one’s principles];
and (c) bonding [with the Rebbe].
The sources for these three interpretations are found in three statements of the Sages —
in Shekalim 6:2, Yevamos 62a, and Bereishis Rabbah 20[:7], respectively.
Implied is that yechidus clarifies one’s [spiritual] situation,
designates the pattern of one’s Divine service in turning away from evil and fostering positive character traits,
and bonds [a chassid to his Rebbe] in perfect union,
enabling him to devote himself and all his personal desires to the Rebbe.

My grandfather, [the Rebbe Maharash, discussed
the expectation that a chassid devote time to] profound meditation on a difficult concept, saying:
“If the matter at hand genuinely affects a person, then he will understand and grasp it very well.
“Proof of this can be found in the Torah, in the laws concerning women
and the legal arguments that they could put forth —
arguments that are debated by the Tannaim, the Amoraim, and the Geonim,
who were all prodigious intellectuals!
Now, the Torah is a Torah of truth,
yet women [at large] are not capable of advancing such [intricate] arguments.
But the truth is that
when a matter genuinely affects a person, even a limited mind can propose deep arguments.”

The Tzemach Tzedek enumerated three factors
in whose merit he was successful at the Rabbinical Conference in Petersburg in 5603 (1843).
One of them was the 32,000 hours
that he toiled in [studying] the discourses of the Alter Rebbe
over a period of thirty years, from 5564 to 5594 (1804-1834).
In 5564 (1804) he established a fixed session for the study of those maamarim,
and in 5594 (1834), work began on their publication.
