Tamsyn Reynolds describes herself as a raiser, carer, CEO, stylist and lover of 3 children, 2 dogs, 1 hair salon, 3 brands and 1 Italian man. Tamsyn is the founder and CEO of Hello Hair Fourways in Johannesurg. In this episode she shares her reflections on starting and growing a business as a single mom, navigating the personal care industry as a business during COVID19, and her visions for the future of the Hello Hair Fourways brand.

Weaam Williams, is a Muslim woman screen-writer, director and poet. She has found her voice as a woman and activist using cinema. She is the owner of Tribal Alchemy Productions, a Cape Town based, independent production company.

She, is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with poetry, music and film. Her directorial debut, Hip-Hop Revolution, had its international Premiere at Silverdocs in 2007. It won the Best

Edited Film Award at NYC Reel Sisters Film Festival in 2008, and has been broadcast in 28 countries.

In 2009-2013 she undertook an independent filmmaking project titled “A Khoe Story Docu-Trilogy”. It is a three part documentary series about the language, genocide and remaining culture

of South Africa’s indigenous people.

Weaam undertook her latest film, District Six Rising from the Dust in 2013 after moving into District Six, with her cinematographer husband, Nafia Kocks. The move and film simultaneously

awoken an understanding of inter-gnerational pain and dispossession. This film won an Award of Excellence from the Scandinavian International Film Festival, and was the Special Mention at

CTIFMF for Best SA Documentary. District Six Rising from the Dust is funded by the National

Film and Video Foundation (SA) and the Foundation for Human Rights (SA).

She is a member of the Film Fatales, a New York based organisation which represents women feature film directors. Her most recent project “Two Hues” is a short narrative film, for which she is the screenplay writer and director. She worked closely with esteemed script-editor Julie Hall on this project. This film looks at the ambigious identity of Muslim women living in a western context, and the duality of patriachy.

Weaam recently screened a work in progress documentary “The Rise” at the Doc Corner in Cannes, which is another documentary project in the pipeline.

“As an activist I will always have a passion for documetary because of its ability to mobilise change, however, I am channeling my creative energy to do more conceptual work in the fiction narrative genre of film, as my foundations in filmmaking

is as a screen writer.”

Telehealth opens many opportunities for accessibility to healthcare services. However, all healthcare professionals in South Africa must practice within the guidelines of the Health Professions Council (HPCSA), and till recently, telehealth was not permitted without the presence of another therapist physically present with the patient on the other end. When South Africa was placed under lockdown due to the COVID19 pandemic, this included therapy services that, while very important to the wellbeing of patients, were not deemed life or death essential services, and so many therapy practices were closed during this time. This posed a major concern for patients who were in the middle of rehabilitation who would lose much of the progress made in therapy due to the long discontinuation of services, and for patients who were in pain, or needed psycho social support during this incredibly difficult time. It was with these concerns in mind, and the pressure by therapists to the HPCSA to amend the guidelines to make provision for telehealth, that teletherapy became a reality for South Africans.

Of course with anything new there were many questions about how traditionally very hands-on therapies such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy or speech and language therapy could provide these therapies virtually. In this episode I spoke to a physiotherapist, who was instrumental in supporting health professionals to be embrace teletherapy effectively, as well as and two occupational therapists who have created a multidisciplinary online therapy platform. They shared their views and experiences with the teletherapy and the hustle to move teletherapy forward in South Africa.

Basheera is an occupational therapist and has experience of working with children of different abilities and their families in communities, hospitals, non-profit organisations and private practices. She is the founder of Diketo Inclusive Education, an organisation that supports and trains Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners and primary schools on how to build inclusive play and learning spaces. Basheera was nominated by News24 as one of the "100 Young Mandela's of the future" based in her work with children and their families.

Tiaan is a physiotherapist with a Postgraduate Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy (OMT 1) certification through the Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy Group of the South African Society of Physiotherapy. Tracey-Lee is a powerhouse singer, comedian, actress and voice over artist. Originally from a small town near Cape Town called Grabouw, she came to Johannesburg in 2005 to pursue her singing career.

She has competed in various talent contests namely; Project Fame (M-Net), Afrikaans Idols (KykNet) and The Voice (M-Net.) Project Fame catapulted Tracey-Lee on the road to stardom having worked as a session musician and casino singer. Twice nominated for her performance of Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, she has also blown audiences away in Motown and Knights of Music at Gold Reef City. Tracey-Lee has performed alongside David Kau and Joey Rasdien in the feature film, Blitz Patrollie (2013) and starred in the reality TV series, SugarRushed. 2014 saw Tracey-Lee join the ranks of Goliath and Goliath bringing a musical element to the Kings and Queens of Comedy National Tour. In 2016, she was one of the five leading ladies in Supreme Divas (Joburg Theatre.)

More recently Tracey played the role of Aunty Merle's daughter opposite Marc Lottering (who plays Aunty Merle) in "Aunty Merle the Musical" and took the lead role alongside Nigel Morkel in the musical extravaganza "Ignited" where she blew audiences away with her rendition of the song "Never Enough" from the soundtrack of "The Greatest Showman".

Episode 19 - #16daysofactivism with Lindsay Henson from Lawyers Against Abuse

Lindsay Henson is the Executive Director of non-profit organisation Lawyers against Abuse (LvA) in September 2014. She holds a law degree from Harvard Law School (2014) and a B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles (2007). Before joining LvA, Lindsay worked with NGOs in India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines addressing gender-based violence and other human rights issues. She also has experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual violence in both the criminal and civil legal systems in the United States and is admitted to the New York State Bar. We invited Lindsay on the podcast in observance of 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence in South Africa (25 November - 10 December). It takes serious hustle to keep the lights on and the engine running in a non-profit like LvA. In this episode, Lindsay shares some of her personal journey as well as some wisdom from her experience of managing a non-profit organisation.

 

Advice and perspectives on what it takes to manage a Non-Profit

As the Executive Director of a small non-profit, Lindsay has had to wear multiple hats from accounting and financial administration, building relationships with donors, fundraising, running events, doing the marketing, updating social media, keeping the operations of the organization on track, managing the staff, and the list continues. Although Lindsay started out her journey into social justice as a lawyer, as a leader of an organization, she has had to be less hands-on with the technical aspects of the service. Lindsay enjoys being in the leadership role, but feels that her experience starting out on the ground was a critical part of her development as a leader.

The nature of the work Lindsay and her team does can be emotionally draining, with burnout rates already being high in the non-profit sector. At LvA an important part of working for the organization is having debriefing sessions and encouraging self-care. They also incorporate monthly wellness sessions with the team

Social Justice and Working to Combat Gender-based Violence

LvA provides holistic legal and psychosocial support to victims of gender-based violence and to facilitates systemic change through strategic engagement with state actors and the communities in which they serve. Since LvA follows a community-based model where they have to be deeply rooted in the community, the organization has been very purposeful in focusing on just one area. They are currently based in Diepsloot where there is a very high prevalence of inter-generational gender-based violence. LvA was established to address the problem that perpetrators are more often than not held accountable due to an inefficient justice system, which perpetuates the cycle of violence in the community. Through their legal expertise they provide support in helping victims obtain protection orders and also support them in criminal cases. We support them all the way from the moment they go to the police to open a case, making sure they are treated with dignity and respect,
