  • #1176 - Give them the exit

Your buyer feels pushed. So they back off, go quiet, or say "let me think about it."

๐—œ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚'๐—น๐—น ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป: why giving buyers permission to walk away makes them more likely to buy, how to say it without sounding weak, and why needy selling kills deals.

Most sellers do the opposite. They use pressure, scarcity and tactics to get a yes. But buyers are already deciding whether to say no. Pretending they can't just makes them more guarded.

James explains the pushback. Tell the buyer you'd love to work with them, then remind them the decision is theirs. It sounds risky. But it makes people feel safe, confident and in control. Some will walk away, and that's fine. The ones who stay buy with more confidence, because you weren't needy.

Most follow ups are written for the seller. Have you had any questions? Are you ready to buy? Just touching base. They're all about moving your deal forward, and the buyer can feel it. So they don't reply.

James explains why the fix is to flip the question. Not "what do I want?" but "what will give them a reason to respond?" Lead with value. Leave people better than you found them. And if you can't spot a reason for them to reply, your follow up isn't ready to send.

The one question that massively increases your chances of selling

Why your buyer's idea of success is how they'll score you

How to spot what you can't deliver before it becomes a problem

Every buyer has a picture in their head of what good looks like. That picture is what they'll judge you on. But very few sellers ask about it. They deliver the product or service, then they're shocked when the buyer feels let down.

James explains why "what does success look like for you?" is one of the most powerful questions in sales. Whatever words you use, the aim is the same. Find out how you're being measured. Then focus on hitting those markers. And if there's something you can't deliver, you get to talk about it early, before anyone is disappointed.

๐—œ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚'๐—น๐—น ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป: why effort is the missing piece in most sales conversations, how it causes refunds and regret, and how explaining it can win back buyers who say they haven't got time.

Most sellers talk about the problem they solve and the result the buyer gets. That's good. But buyers are also quietly asking a third question. How much work is this going to be for me? If you don't answer it, they guess. And they often guess wrong.

James explains how effort cuts both ways. Make it sound too hard and people walk away when they didn't need to. Hide it and people buy, then regret it. Being upfront about time, effort and who does what stops buyer's remorse and gives hesitant buyers the confidence to go ahead.

"Save time." "Boost efficiency." "Make more money." Every seller says it. Buyers hear it so often it goes straight past them. The vaguer your promise, the harder it is to say yes, because there's nothing solid to stand on.

James explains why buyers want concrete results. Clear numbers and clear timeframes. And when your work can't be measured that way, he shows how a simple 1 to 10 scale, the same one hospitals use for pain, still gives buyers something real to hold on to.

You tell the buyer what they get. But do they actually know what they're getting?

๐—œ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚'๐—น๐—น ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป: why buyers don't want your hours, how to turn your time into a clear deliverable, and why your buyer needs something they can justify to someone else.

If you sell by the hour, the day or the retainer, your buyer has to work out what that time is worth. Most won't. They just see a cost. And when someone in finance asks "what are we actually paying for?", your buyer has nothing to say.

I break down how to switch from selling what you do to selling what they're really buying. Nobody wants two gym sessions a week for six weeks. They want to lose the weight. You have to do that thinking for your buyer, be specific, and package it so the outcome is obvious.

Most sales presentations start in the wrong place. A bit about the company. When it was founded. A round of introductions where everyone shares a fun fact. Buyers sit through it politely, but they're thinking one thing: can you help us or not?

In this episode I explain syntax, the posh word for the order of things. Change the order and you change the meaning. In sales, that means getting to the point. Start with the buyer's problem, show how you'll solve it, get them interested. The backstory can come later, if at all.

The deal is close. Then you lay out the next steps and your buyer goes quiet.

    - Why telling buyers the next steps can create resistance

    - The simple question that hands them a bit of control

    - What to do if they say "I don't know"

When you tell a buyer exactly what happens next, it can feel like they're being pushed down a track. Even if the steps are sensible, it adds tension. And tension slows deals down.

In this episode I share a small switch. Instead of "here are the next steps," ask "what would you like to do from here?" or "where's the best place for you to start?" You still know the plan. But the buyer feels in control, which makes them far more likely to keep moving. Worst case, they're not sure, and you carry on as normal.

  • #1167 - How to Find Out What Success Looks Like to Your Buyer

You delivered exactly what you promised. So why is the client still unhappy?

    - The simple question most sellers forget to ask

    - How knowing what success looks like prevents refunds and bad reviews

    - Why this question protects you if the client moves the goalposts

Most unhappy clients aren't unhappy because you did a bad job. They're unhappy because you never agreed what a good job looked like. You worked to your idea of success. They had a different one.

In this episode I share one question that fixes this: "What does success look like to you?" Sometimes the answer is less than you planned to deliver. Sometimes it's more, and you've dodged a disaster. Either way, hit it and you get happy clients, referrals and glowing reviews. And if they change their mind later, you've got a clear point to go back to.

  • #1166 - How to Handle Silence After Your Sales Presentation

You finish your pitch, ask "any questions?" and get silence. That's not a good sign. It's a warning.

    - Why silence after a presentation doesn't mean people understood

    - How to suggest the questions your buyers are too shy to ask

    - Why unanswered questions quietly damage your deals

People don't ask questions for all sorts of reasons. They haven't thought of one yet. They feel awkward. They don't want to look silly or cause a scene. So they stay quiet, and the doubt stays with them.

In this episode I share what I learned from years of public speaking. When the room goes quiet, don't move on. Say "people usually ask about these three things" and answer them. It shows you know your stuff, shows confidence on tricky topics like price, and it might just answer the question that was going to cost you the deal.
