To meet its climate change goals, Colorado is facing a massive challenge. The state has pledged to cut C-O-2 emissions by 50% by 2030. That means getting roughly 70 million tons of C-O-2 out of the air annually. Closing gas- and coal-fired power plants will only get the state so far. So, too, will trading more gas-guzzling vehicles for electric ones. So Colorado has begun to look at something bold: carbon sequestration. Reporter Michael Booth recently dug into the state’s planning around the concept. He spoke with fellow Sun reporter John Ingold about what he has learned.

Adults age 55 and older are one of the groups with the biggest number of workers leaving the labor force during the pandemic. The reasons for that are many. But older workers often find it difficult when trying to re-enter the workforce or to change jobs. That’s a problem that existed before the pandemic, too. Now, as Colorado Sun reporter Tamara Chuang learned, the state and a number of organizations are working to fix the problem. And employers are beginning to see a benefit to hiring older workers. The former residents of the Summit View Inn, in Aurora, say they lived for months in horrible conditions. Mice. Cockroaches. Bedbugs. But now they are suing their landlord over what they say is an even worse indignity. The residents say they were kicked out of their homes by armed guards who didn’t follow the law for eviction proceedings. Colorado Sun reporter Tatiana Flowers is following the story. After making big cuts to greenhouse gases from electric utilities and oil and gas producers, Colorado is now asking the next big cuts to come from the agency that has spent 100 years making it easier for cars, not harder. But the Colorado Department of Transportation says it is up to the task. The department is now writing rules requiring that any local agency planning a big road project must also plan to lower emissions overall through expanding rapid transit, or building bike lanes, or demanding that office buildings get built closer to where people live. On any given day in a sweat-stained gym in Boulder, 70 and 80 year old athletes with Parkinson’s disease are strapping on the boxing gloves and learning some new moves. The debilitating disease can cause tremors and body stiffness, among other challenges, and these older Coloradans are trying new ways to keep limber and keep their minds sharp. Kevin Simpson takes us into a world where former boxers are teaming up with some unlikely clients to go a few rounds with their body demons. And in the process they are opening the eyes of other athletes. Michael Booth talks with Kevin about the Boulder gym, and the coaches and older athletes who make it a lively place.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID in Colorado took another worrying jump on Wednesday, to more than 1,500 patients. This disturbing spike has public health officials concerned, especially because when combined with patients in the hospital for other reasons, there are now only about 75 intensive care beds available statewide. Health reporter John Ingold has been tracking the trend and the response to it. He talked with Michael Booth about what’s going on with the disease and attempts to manage it in Colorado.

American culture has always revered the agricultural way of life. But we haven’t always treated Colorado’s field workers and ranch hands as if we revered them. Advocates for farm workers set out to change that in the past legislature, passing laws meant to improve overtime pay and other working conditions. They also left some of the more specific rules up to the executive branch to work out, and the Colorado Sun’s Thy Vo has been following the new agriculture worker protections through the process. Colorado residents and recent transplants looking for an affordable home may be surprised that for the past year, they’ve often been bidding against Zillow. There has been a string of fentanyl-related overdoses in Boulder County in recent months. More than a dozen people have died, ranging in age from 18 to 68. Two 18-year-olds died less than three days apart. Two young men, including a University of Colorado student, died separately on the same day in June.

Reporters Jen Brown and Olivia Prentzel dug into what’s happening. They spoke with Jesse Paul about what they found.
