The Daily Thistle declared libero Saylor Gray player of the game in last night’s 3-2 win over St. Anne’s Belfield.  The Scotties marched to a 2-0 lead when a tough St. Anne’s Belfield team clawed their way to tie the scotties 2-2.  The Scotties fell behind 8-4 in the final game when a key timeout found the Scotties beginning to rally.

School Updates. Ms. Sgroi, head coach of the tennis team, has done an immaculate job forming a powerful team. She does not take “I can’t” as an answer and pushes every single girl to their fullest. As a member of the team I know firsthand that everybody on the team, new tennis players and old have improved by a considerable amount under her leadership. We will now hear from other members on the team about what they think.

In our Centennial year, there is a kind of rebirth in our Episcopal school. The focus of the school is the church, the river, and scholarship. Our head of school invokes it as the “Gospel of Do.”

Our daily podcast is part of this, we work everyday to bring you news of St. Margaret’s School, as well as global outlooks from the BBC and other outlets.

And what we have learned at the Daily Thistle? A daily podcast is a daily exercise in showing our daily work in the name of St. Margaret’s School.  This is why we are the only independent school hosting a podcast of this kind.

The portraits of the original owners were unfortunately removed in 2016, but Centennial plans are to return them to the B-House. One of them includes its original occupants, Catherine Flood McCall, who died a spinster. Known by legend as “The Grey Lady,” it is said that the sounds of her swishing skirts and soft footsteps are heard throughout the house. It is understandable that she has stayed on when surrounded with such elegance and beauty as is presented by the historic Brockenbrough-McCall House.

And so we continue our Centennial stories, we pick up the earlier story of the Brockenbrough-McCall House written by Dianne Saison.

In 1927, it was bought by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia to be used as the second building of the burgeoning St. Margaret’s School.

Over the centuries, the additional edifice was built upon, with rooms added to the front and back, as well as a front porch uniting the two wings.  The house is Flemish bond brick encased in wood.

In 1813, the home was purchased by Dr. Austin Brockenbrough, son of Dr. John Brockenbrough, who served the Navy as a surgeon and was one of Tappahannock’s leading physicians.

As we lead up to our Centennial stories, we pick up the earlier story of the Brockenbrough-McCall House written by Dianne Saison.

Despite the turmoil, the family remained in residence. In 1767, Katherine died during the birth of the couple’s second daughter, Catherine McCall. With two young children in a country fraught with political upheaval, McCall decided to send his daughters overseas to a school in Scotland. In 1770, a changed man, he added his signature to a non-importation decree.
