One of the things that is a nearly universal feeling for writers is that marketing is a necessary evil. I'm thrilled to have a guest today who is here to give us a whole different view of marketing. Her name is Anna McKenzie.
As a professional copywriter and the owner of CreativeDemand, LLC, Anna has over a decade of experience in building content production systems, developing strategic marketing plans, and executing sales campaigns. She has written sales copy for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and bestselling authors; worked with national and global brands; and helped business owners sell millions of dollars’ worth of products online. She has also written a fantastic new book called Mission, Market, Message: The Actionable Guide to Marketing for Small Business Owners.
In this conversation, Anna helps us understand the basics of marketing, why we need it as writers, and how we can think like business owners.
You can learn more about Anna’s marketing approach at her website, through her Business Writing Starter Kit, or on LinkedIn.

Nobody intends to kill their big dream. After all, our dreams are what keep us going. We think about them day and night, we plan our future around them, we nurture them with books, movies, and other content that keep the dream alive.
But inevitably, sometimes we kill the dream. How does this happen?
On today’s episode, you’ll discover what kills your dream and how you can keep it alive.

The problem with being human is that we are stuck in our own bodies. We secretly imagine that everybody else is confident and secure, and we’re the only ones who are feeling a little shaky.
The real question is not whether you’re alone in feeling self-doubt. Everyone struggles with self-doubt. Instead, the real question is whether you will follow through with your writing.
On today’s episode, you’ll be reminded that self-doubt is normal, but you do not need to let it paralyze you.

Every writer talks about wanting success, but what does success actually mean? How do you measure it? Is it even a worthy goal in the first place?
Those are valid questions, but they aren’t what we should be asking first. Instead, we should be asking how we can add value to others’ lives.
On today’s episode, Kent shares three simple ways you can encourage and make connections with the people around you.

When a book is popular, it gives the impression that it was written for the masses. After all, if thousands or even millions of people love a book, it must have been written for them, correct?
Well, no. A book is a conversation between an author and an individual reader. It’s not a conversation between an author and a large group of people.
On today’s episode, you’ll learn that writing to be the favorite author of one person allows you to resonate with a wider audience.

Most of us grow up believing that we can change the world.
Then, as we get older, some life experience and a bit of cynicism set in. Pretty soon we give up on the idea of changing much of anything… much less the world.
But imagine for a moment… what if you COULD actually change the world? How would you go about it?
On today’s episode, Kent reminds us that writers are uniquely positioned to change the world.

John Steinbeck said, “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.”
Writers are known for their creativity, but the truth is that the well sometimes runs dry. If you’ve ever found yourself fresh out of ideas, a way to instantly get more is by using a strategy called “Idea Mating.”
On today’s episode, you’ll discover an effective method for coming up with lots of ideas.
