  • Same Ingredients, Different Presentation

What is the difference between an expensive steakhouse and a fast-food burger place?

They both use the same ingredients for their main product: beef. Yet the experience can be vastly different. When you have dinner at a great steakhouse, it’s not just about the food. Although it may be wonderful, it’s also the experience that counts. On the other hand, the experience is totally different when you go through a cheap fast-food burger place.

It’s not just about ingredients. It’s about taking the raw ingredients, preparing them the right way, then serving them to people with care and attention so they have a great experience.

The same thing is true for our words.

On today’s episode, you’ll learn why it’s important to polish your work, so that you can give your readers the best experience possible.

  • The Publishing Habit

Here at the Daily Writer, we talk a lot about the habit of writing regularly. That’s nothing new. Every good writing teacher talks about the importance of a good writing habit.

Another habit that is equally important, yet for some reason emphasized much less, is the publishing habit. If you want to impact other people with your words, you must not only write them… you must also publish them.

On today’s episode, you’ll be reminded why it’s vital not to just write, but to share your writing with the world.

  • David Hancock: Morgan James, the Publisher for Author Entrepreneurs

David Hancock is a Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author, and the founder of Morgan James Publishing. As the founder of Morgan James Publishing, David was selected for Fast Company Magazine’s Fast 50 for his leadership, creative thinking, significant accomplishments, and incredible impact on the industry over the last ten years.

I wanted to have David as a guest not only because of his obvious connection with books, but also to talk about the importance of being an author in the first place. David saw firsthand how powerful it can be to have books of your own, which is why he started Morgan James in the first place.

Here is something I don't often get to say about podcast guests: we also wrote a book together! Along with our co-author Bobby Kipper, David and I collaborated on a book that will be published through Morgan James next May. It's titled Performance Driven Giving, and it's a follow-up to David and Bobb's first book in this series, Performance Driven Thinking. I'll share more on that early next year closer to the release date.

So needless to say, I’m grateful for David Hancock and am thrilled that he’s joined me for this conversation. You’ll learn about David’s unique background that led him into publishing, the benefits of writing a book, and how Morgan James approaches publishing differently.

You can connect with David on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Morgan James Publishing.

  • The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

In the world of computers, WYSIWYG stands for “what you see is what you get.” It refers to an editing system or interface where the content you see onscreen shows exactly how it will look when it’s printed or displayed elsewhere.

But WYSIWYG can also refer to the writing life as a whole. What you see is truly what you get.

On today’s episode, you’ll be reminded that your perspective radically changes your life.

  • Keep Putting in the Work

Have you ever written something and expected people to immediately love it? Maybe you wrote an article, book, or social media post and felt disappointed that it wasn't a hit. But if you look to other industries such as music and baseball, you will have a hit less than three out of ten times.

Every time you step up to the plate, or go into that recording studio, or sit down to write, you’re putting in the work. You’re developing your craft. You’re getting better all the time.

On today’s episode, Kent shares insights from the music industry and baseball to highlight that the secret to your success is showing up each day to work.

  • Put One Word After Another

One of the tropes that seems to follow creative types around is the myth of the “tortured artist.” The myth goes something like this: creative work is very, very difficult, and it requires the artist to give their blood, sweat, and tears to their creative work.

But where does this myth come from? We don’t have time for a long history lesson here, but here is one explanation for why creative types, including writers, like to perpetuate this myth.

The reason is because we want to believe the work is hard. We like the idea that the creative work we are doing is extraordinarily difficult.

But what if we took the opposite approach?

On today’s episode, you’ll discover why enjoying your creative work actually improves your productivity.
