Next up in our analysis of the key aspects of Coach Grimes' offense and how it will be applied to the Badgers in 2025. Continuing with that theme, today we’ll be looking at the vertical passing game. Right after the wide zone, the first thing Coach Grimes always emphasizes is the vertical passing game and the ability to generate chunk plays at any time, on any down and distance, by pushing the ball downfield. However, one key misconception that often comes up when discussing the vertical passing game is the idea that it’s just a "chuck-and-duck" offense—sending everyone deep and throwing the ball up on a wing and a prayer, hoping to come down with it. In reality, the vertical passing game is much more than that. There is a core philosophy behind its concepts, incorporating a wide range of routes, targets, and passing zones into a single, cohesive strategy. That’s what we’ll be exploring today. We’ll discuss what the vertical passing game is, how it’s structured, and then analyze some examples of Coach Grimes running vertical passing plays at Kansas. After that, we’ll talk about what elements from the 2024 offense could be carried over into 2025. As we mentioned last time, Coach Grimes is a highly collaborative play-caller. If there are effective elements from the Air Raid, he will find ways to incorporate them into his system and make them successful. So, with that in mind, let’s head into the classroom and take a closer look at the vertical passing game.
