Patti Smith is an icon, a wordsmith, a dreamer. But she would never call herself a musician.
Patti joins Dan on South Beach Sessions, explaining why she has always seen herself as a performer, first. She speaks about her upbringing, her ability to wander as a child, and the powerful presence of writing in her life. Patti also touches on her inspirations and evolution as an artist... and how the presence (and absence) of those inspiring people drives her forward. Of course, there are also her stories about meeting the Pope, her most moving performance, and what it means to her for her work to touch people across generations around the world. Patti's latest bestseller, "Bread of Angels: A Memoir", is now available in paperback, hardcover, eBook, audio, and wherever you get your books.

One guest. One big question. No noise.
Who Asked You is Dan’s ongoing sit-down series — no panel, no shouting, just one guest and one question, worked all the way through. In an industry where credentials once decided who got to talk, anyone with a camera and an opinion can claim a seat now, and nobody’s required to answer for it. This episode asks what that shift actually cost.
Just in time to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Pardon The Interruption, Michael Wilbon comes in ready to fight about it. He traces the decline not to sports media specifically but to the culture underneath it — a blunt, self-skewering case that audiences stopped reading, stopped wanting the underpinning, and got comfortable not knowing the difference between a columnist and a reporter. He and Dan put real blame on sports talk radio for normalizing opinion without labor behind it, then Wilbon turns the lens on himself: the years he spent earning the right to an opinion, the editor who wouldn’t let him write a column until he knew something, and the colleague, Ralph Wiley, who bled red ink over his early work because the stakes for who got to go next were higher than just one career.
From there the conversation widens into the business side — Eric Rydholm, Mark Shapiro, and the shift that turned sports writers into cheap, bankable television content, hollowing out the newspaper sections that trained people like Wilbon in the first place. That’s the extinction this episode is really about: the reporter who stood around the batting cage for years before earning an opinion is being replaced by the hot take, which needs no cage, no sources, no time served. Wilbon draws a hard line between the two, defends the reporting still underneath his own work, and takes aim at Stephen A. Smith’s version of the same question, respectfully and not so respectfully.
