Collin Quin was on Howard Stern and he said the worst advice he ever gave anybody was Larry the Cable Guy.  “Howard. I remember he started doing this cable guy thing on stage. I told Dan Whitney and said drop that redneck stick, Foxworthy owns it.  You are funny without it. Don’t ever take advice from me.”

Larry the Cable Guy: People told me Foxworthy owned the Redneck stick and I shouldn’t do it.  It was Foxworthy that helped me come up with it.  We used to sit at Spring Training Atlanta Braves games in West Palm Beach. What is the 40% Rule in SEAL Team?

Commander Jack: Never heard on active duty SEAL team in 20 years anybody reference a percentage. The reference is how much more is left in the tank when your mind has gotten to the point where it says I’m done.

That right there gives you a little advantage knowing that your body can handle more.

The Mind-Body connection can lie to you. There are good natural reasons through evolution that our brain does that to keep us safe. But there are times that you want to be able to override your instincts and most of those are in high-stress situations. An example would be a car wreck. , You are coming up on a nasty scene and the fact that there may be blood all over the scene or even severe injuries. You want to provide some kind of support as best you can. You’re looking at something you haven’t seen. You might have a visceral reaction, you’ll probably throw up. You’re not out of the fight, throw up, get to work, get in there, do the best you can. Think of how many people freeze right there.

Drives me nuts in society to see human beings frozen when they are capable of so much more.

Communicate, communicate, communicate. It is a core function at the base level of SEAL team. Shoot, move, communicate. Now I would say, shoot, move, communicate, communicate, communicate.

I am not talking about micromanaging or transmitting from a power position, it’s the exact opposite.

What does successful communication looks like in a business or organization? A collective group of people who are cross-talking, sharing ideas, with psychological safety. No matter what your rank is in the organization you feel comfortable sharing your expertise without being fired or ridiculed.

I was a bit stressed and having a go at him for being late. He put his head in his hands and said, I’ve been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was 34 at the time we’ve been planning for a wedding. Suddenly I was thinking, I’m going to be planning this man’s funeral.
