  • Can you taste the words coming out of my mouth
How do those words taste coming out of your mouth? Usually spoken to you when you have to eat your words… like I was wrong, I am sorry or worse yet… the Bears still suck… but the truth is words do have a taste to them… its biblical.

Did you know that some people taste words? No, its true, I am not making this up. Now before you say “oh yea like a cake that spells your name” NOPE. I mean there are people in the world today that when certain words are spoken their brain causes their mouth to taste certain tastes… but here is the weird thing… If I say Banana you don’t taste bananas… it could actually be any key word that triggers the phenomena - for example every time you hear the word gymnasium your brain would tell your taste buds that you taste tomato soup - that would suck if you hated tomato soup. This actually has a scientific name… ready for this one?
Lexical gustatory synesthesia… That makes me taste alphabet soup… JK
But this was first recorded in 1907. It has now been studied  by Neurologist Julia Sinner of the university of edinburgh. The case study was called “The taste of words on the tip of the tongue”. Now only 10 people in Europe and the United states have this condition… but how freaky!
Here are some of the examples these ten people had:
the word Castanets tasted like tuna fish
Hearing the name John made one taste cornbread
Another name William made someone taste potatoes
and still another when hearing tomato would taste bananas… well at least they are both in the fruit family.

But what’s even more insightful is that the bible tells us our words can taste… good, salty sweet or even bitter
    Your words are like salt
Col. 6:4 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Prov. 16:24 Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Prov. 4:20My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21Do not lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. 22For they are life to those who find them, and health to the whole body.…

And James 3:10-12 says our words can be bitter or sweet depending on our heart.

The truth is our words have the same type of response as Lexical gustatory synesthesia
What I mean is - when we go to open our mouth to speak in certain situations people around us are already expecting what to taste.
We all have had the person, boss, father, mother etc… that when they start to talk you can already taste the foul terrible taste. It just is an immediate reaction. You know its going to taste bad, so you already taste it before they even finish their first sentence.
On the other hand we have people that speak into our lives even when we do deserve harsh tasting words… but they do so in such a way that it tastes good, it brings healing and it nourishes our soul to seek God more.
Lets be there person who speaks words of great taste and humble pie - our world needs it more than ever!

Rom. 14:12 we will all be held accountable before God
WHo is my accountant on that day?
Jesus - he paid it all.

    John 4:4
4 He had to go through Samaria on the way. 5 Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”

The Joy of seeing Tanner here at church, plugged in, using his gifts, growing in Jesus - its addicting.

     - Its a good indicator of where your heart is.

*Everybody wants to reach people for Jesus until it’s time to reach people for Jesus. Ed Young

I believe most people want to share Christ, they just lack the confidence and the simple how to.

To call yourself a follower of Christ and not tell others is a sure sign of disconnect in your walk.

So Lets look at Christ example:
She is never named, yet her encounter with Jesus is the longest between the Messiah and any other individual in the Gospel of John.
      - Representing the lowest of the low
     — a female in a society where women are both demeaned and disregarded,
      - a race traditionally despised by Jews,
      - and living in shame as a social outcast not only by the Jews and Romans, but by her own people due to her lifestyle

**Lets say you are standing at the DMV and you have felt all day like Jesus has put a burden on your heart to share Jesus. Two different windows open up in line… a young blonde blue eyed woman in her 30’s and the other person…
Different color, different religion, different country, different attitude, different language
    WHO DO YOU CHOOSE?

THIS WAS EXACTLY JESUS PREDICAMENT - HE CHOSE THE LEAST OF WHO HE SHOULD CHOOSE.

    What happens when he shares?
      - She is not being completely truthful with Jesus
      - She is a sinner of ill repute

    BUT WHAT ELSE HAPPENS?
    — she not only has a holy encounter with Christ but also receives eternal salvation. And her testimony convinces an entire town to believe, too.

11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
YOU DON’T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES…
Ever feel that way. You don’t have what it takes to share the gospel? You are not good enough, you are not smart enough, you are not a pastor, you sin, you don’t know all the answers, you are a young Christian… blah blah blah

What do you have to do to share the gospel with someone… what do you need to know? Well, what did Jesus say- I am the Messiah. All we really need to do is point out that Jesus is the son of God who came to save the world from its sin.

31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”
33 “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.
34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

Hohimers… house, food, good wine, laughter into the late evening early morning hours… It was joyful!

scientists started tracking 269 people for over 80 years and even tracked their kids another 50 years to see what really brings joy in ones life. It absolutely proved beyond a shadow of a doubt it was not money, toys, things, travel, accomplishments, sex, drugs, rock n roll… it was one thing and one thing only. Healthy relationships.

Isaiah 12:1-6 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

    Implies:
    There is a desert
    there is an oasis
It is possible to find it

No tap water only a 100 years ago for many.
    No cold water
Ice blocks my dad would hall
    No refrigerator
Ice water used to be a luxury… wow!
it used to be a microwave was a luxury…
Where do you find your joy?
    Things, people, trophies, accomplishments,

What can cause a lack of joy? or dry times?

We can find joy in our salvation.
Restore unto me the joy of my salvation…
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. (Psalm 51:12)
    what is joyful about salvation?
Repentance and forgiveness is an act of joy.
Communion with the Holy Spirit, Jesus and a right relationship with God the Father.
    He is coming back
    Life with him in heaven
We lose the sinful nature for EVER!

  • Hate Speech

    When someone says
I don’t believe in hate speech - We shouldn’t allow hate speech
    What is hate speech?
    Who gets to decide?
    What if I hate broccoli?
    What if I hate America?
You can’t have freedom of speech without hate speech. If you won’t allow hate speech than you don’t believe in the truth.
Now you might say hate speech is not always truth… yes your are correct, but it does show the true colors of those who speak it. It does show nuances of the problem…
And more often than not, hate speech clearly defines the truth in the opposite direction.
For instance if you judge someone by their body shape… what do you know about them?
    NOTHING. NOT A THING.
You might say -well they are fat… but by who’s definition?
You might assume they are slow… My Dad was smoked in Racquet ball by a short behemoth of a woman… smoked!
Well they over eat and have no discipline… When I go to my endocrinologist I see people who starve themselves and exercise every day and are obese.
When I see white people what do I know?
They love America, life has been easier for them. They get access to things others don’t get.
If I see aliens what do i know about them?
    NOT a THING!
HATE SPEECH DEFINES WHO YOU ARE… NOT WHO YOU OR WHAT YOU HATE.
Let me put it this way… when a couple comes into my office and start to share what the other person is doing wrong… that person could say “hey that sounds like hate speech - I won’t put up with it”
Well first off. it might be the truth- and I can’t help you unless I know the truth.
    AND
If it is hate speech than it will help me understand how to approach the counseling session and how to approach you.
AND FINALLY… hate speech gives me a window into your soul, your past and what hurts and pains you may have encountered.

If you have seen the movie good will hunting, you may remember one of the most powerful scenes is when the counselor “Shawn” played by Robin Williams tells Will Played by Matt Damon tells him its not his fault. Now the movie is set up with Will hating on everyone… but the counselor is smart enough to just let him roll and be who he is and vomit his emotions… until it finally breaks him.
Matt Damons hate speech in the movie gives the counselor great insight into the hurt he is experiencing.

Why is this important? Well when sharing your faith you will come into contact with a lot of hate speech, attacks and false accusations.
Jesus said to expect it - and love them back.
He didn’t say… well if they get mean or hateful leave them alone…. but what about he said shake the dust off your feet and leave them be… Well this is before Jesus died and rose again and is actually called the limited commission, not the great commission. It is a topic for a whole other podcast, but for now - I think we can see Gods heart of going after the lost and rebellious in many more cases in scripture than just simply giving up on people. Back to the topic at hand… Hate speech.
It also gives us a way to Know how to pray
And it shows me that I am hitting a nerve that might actually be a spiritual or demonic issue.
All in all, embrace there person who hates you, embrace the interaction. Love on them and let them see that you are not worried about wether or not they get your approval as much as you are worried about their soul and their eternity.
