  • Happy Thankskilling! 2021
In this season of giving thanks, you should be thankful that we here at Sley House watched the modern classics, Thankskilling and Thankskilling 3 so you don't have to. No, that's not a misprint, these are the two Thankskilling movies, because Thankskilling 3 is all about the evil and foul-mouthed Turkie setting out to find the last remaining copy of Thankskilling 2. So sit back and relax and listen to the guys tell you exactly what they thought of this series. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Episode Eleven: What Happens When a Popular and Influential Author Just Doesn‘t Do It For You?

It's happened to everyone. You hear all the hype about a book and you decide to pick it up and try it for yourself. Or you have heard for a while how influential an author is and decide to give them a try. And then it happens. You aren't drawn in by whatever novel you picked. You try another title by them and find the same problem. You just can't get into them.

Today, Jeremy and Trevor are going to talk about why this happens. They look specifically at Richard Matheson's Hell House and Michael McDowell's Cold Moon Over Babylon, talk about how influential each author is, and talk about why their works don't resonate with them. Along the way they debate art and whether it's subjective or objective, and whether or not we can really judge or review art. And, as artists, should we even listen to those reviews. So take a listen and if you think about a book that fits this mold, feel free to comment on our Twitter accounts @SleyHouse or @SleyHouseLitBits or email us at [email protected].

If you're hoping for an in-depth look at the movie franchise, however, you'll be out of luck, as they could barely make it through the second movie. But they discuss the first one, compare it to the novel, and even discuss the upcoming remake. So settle in, push play and get ready as we prepare to "...Tear Your Soul Apart!"

  • Episode Seven: Horacio Quiroga‘s Short Story ”The Feather Pillow”
Few writers have been more influential than Horacio Quiroga. Responsible for bringing Edgar Allan Poe to South America and laying the foundations that would become magical realism, a writer who directly influenced some of the biggest names in middle 20th Century Spanish literature; this week the boys look at Quiroga's life, his influences, and his short horror story, "The Feather Pillow."

  • Episode Six: A Look (Heh heh) at Edith Wharton‘s ”The Eyes”
This week, our hosts try to "keep up with the Joneses" as they take a quick look at a classic short story by a well-respected literary author. While known as a literary figure who showcased the aristocracy in her fiction, Wharton wrote some powerful and effective ghost stories, influenced by, in part, her husband's serial infidelity. In this episode, the guys look at one of her more famous ghost stories with respect to these themes.

  • Episode Five: A Look at How Genre and the Literary Can Work Together
Stephen Graham Jones is a prolific author (and, as the boys learn, NOT the editor for the Best New Horror) whose work has garnered awards and praise from literary and genre-centric sources alike. Today, Jeremy and Trevor sit down to discuss the author's phenomenal work, The  Only Good Indians, and Trevor learns the difference between deer and elk, while Jeremy discovers negative viewership.

  • Summer 2021 Movie Review
In this first ever extra long episode, the guys discuss recent movie releases, including the good, the bad, and the ugly (movie quality, that is, not the old Clint Eastwood classic western). They talk about what works, what doesn't, and try out some new theme song ideas for an iconic horror villain. All the while waxing poetic on the double entendre that is the phrase, "Happy ending."
