On April 10th 1834, a fire would start in the mansion at 1140 Royal Street. The elderly cook who was enslaved, chained to the stove started this fire, and when asked why, she explained she did not want to go to the attic. This piqued their attention, and they went to the attic. What they found was deplorable. Enslaved people chained in an attic, abused, and tortured, and barely surviving.
