The Deep by Zoe Marshall episodes

  • The Carer
Today's episode is about a beautiful mother by the name of Kathie who has been a carer to her child, Miranda, for the past 15 years. Miranda suffered what seemed to be a little injury at school but was in fact a major brain injury that has changed her life and her family's life forever. This is a heavy conversation, it is also heartbreaking. Listen to this with a big open heart and be ready to cry. Because life is so unfair sometimes.
Content warning: this episode mentions suicide. For help please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

  • The Alien Encounter
Today I speak with Luna who has direct contact with aliens. At first I was pretty unsure, and I'm sure many of you are listening to this about to roll your eyes. I get it. This episode will push you to the edge but keep your mind open. It is wild and so funny at times whilst also quite beautiful and profound whether you end up believing or not.

  • A Parent's Worst Nightmare - Follow Up
Today we get to speak to the beautiful Molly who we've heard from before. She is a Mum of two young girls who were sexually assaulted by her long term partner. We had a tremendous response from her episode with so many listeners asking about the court case, about how the girls were and showing so much love and support. Some even wanted to give money to her and the girls who at the time were displaced and not living in a permanent home. Before listening to this I encourage you to go back and listen to that first episode, linked below, as this time Molly and I speak about everything that has happened since she was last on The Deep.
Listen to Molly's previous interview here.

  • The Bodzilla
Today I speak to The Bodzilla also known as April. She is a trailblazer. A woman that has created a space for body acceptance and fat positivity. We are talking about Fat.. the shame, the stigma, the attitudes towards it and how we need to banish Fat being bad. This is a really honest conversation between two very different women, our relationships with our bodies and how we need to change the narrative around the word FAT.
Content warning: This episode discusses child abuse, restrictive eating, weight loss and eating disorders. For assistance please contact The Butterfly Foundation on 1800 33 4673.

  • Invasion Day 2022
The Deep acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
Aj is a proud indigenous woman and educator.
You would have heard our invasion day conversation this time last year.
Seeing as we are here again and the date still hasn't changed - we still have much more to discuss and educate ourselves. I have asked Aj what she feels has progressed since last year, about the BLM movement and if the black tiles meant anything. As well as children still being stolen, deaths in custody and how Australia is still a racist nation.
    Episodes mentioned:
    • The Child of the Stolen Generation
    • The Prison Birth
    • The Ally We Need

  • Mr Iconic the Porno Star
Today I speak to Mr Iconic, aka Chris, who is Australia's most popular male pornstar. We've had a lot of sex workers on The Deep, but never a male sex worker. We cover what it's like to have children whilst being in the sex industry, the impact his career has had on his parents and what it is like when there is real passion away from the scenes he is shooting.

  • The Gossip Guy
Today I speak to Jonathon Moran also known as JMo and... Australia's biggest gossip columnist. Over the years I have had my time with JMo - sometimes happy, sometimes disgruntled at the angle the stories he has written about me have taken. Today I ask him all the questions about one of the world's most controversial jobs. Who hates him, how awkward it is, does he sleep at night after writing something horrible about someone. This episode has so many levels - just like JMo. The most surprising part is who JMo is at the core. The trauma he has endured and his daily mental health battle make for another unique conversation, one you might not be expecting

  • The Open Relationship
Do you think you could watch your lover get dolled up for an evening, putting on perfume and their sexiest undies... knowing they were about to sleep with someone else? So many of us couldn't even imagine, but many people can - and do. Being in an open relationship or living in "the lifestyle" for some is liberating and is the most loving way they know to honour their partner.

  • Zoe and Danae Candidly Debrief
This week’s episode is very different, we’ve never really done anything like this on The Deep before. Danae, my birth doula who you heard from last week, came to see me about four months after Ever’s birth. We hadn’t seen each other since and we wanted to debrief together. The conversation was so good that I just had to stop her, grab a microphone and put it between us to start recording before we continued the chat. You may notice that the audio is a bit different because we only used the one mic, but it's just a conversation not an interview and I thought it was worth sharing, so enjoy!
You can find out more information and contacts details for Danae on her website www.danaebirthdoula.com.au and the birth documentary she mentioned is Birth Time www.birthtime.world
