Randall masks up and digs into the dusty stacks at a used bookstore and comes up with a pile of books from all over the map. Does he get something amazing? Not usually, but that never stops him from digging… Bonus Content: Isaac can’t understand why Tokyo Ghost isn’t more valuable before coveting Rand’s copy of Aliens vs Predator.

Today finds Randall pulling out a strange mix of oversized comics and magazines bought as a box lot in an estate sale from the household of an old guy – maybe a shopkeeper or antique store owner? – who collected a truly random bunch of stuff and maybe wasn’t so picky about what he was collecting. Isaac is enthusiastic about the local TV Times newspaper inserts, but Randall didn’t bring them. The truly mixed bag of comics is fun and weird, but I don’t think anybody will be retiring on the riches uncovered… For your own safety, don’t take a drink every time Randall says something is “fun”. Note: he says it a lot.

Well, here we go, dipping into the fun of buying random “collections” in the area and then double-checking what we got. It’s all the fun of sitting at a slot machine without the flight to Vegas, hotels, buffet tummy trouble and that whole thing about smoking indoors. Oh, and COVID… So, did we win? Check this ep to find out what comes out of our first bunch of “filler” DC titles.

Isaac and Randall welcome writer, filmmaker, hardcore fan and collector of many things Kyle Newman to the Staysh (via Skype) for a conversation that goes deep into why we are what we are and do what we do in pop culture. We’re happy to find ourselves working on some things with Kyle and really enjoyed this chance to get to know a little more about his nerdentials, which turns out to cover a very wide range ideed. Most recently, he’s coming out with a D&D cookbook – you read that right and it’s called Heroes’ Feast – coming out soon. We can’t wait to read it and eat it.

You can tell this fan-favourite superhero is Canadian because there’s a “u” in the word favourite… You could guess by his grey beard that Rand has been on the Wolverine bandwagon since the late 70s and is only too happy to catch Isaac up on a pile of issues, some of which are the holiest of holy grails. Can you guess which one? Of course it’s stereotypical to collect Wolverine and yes, the character was way overdone during the X-Men craze and stands as emblematic of when the comics bubble burst back in the day, but good is good even when the volume is high and it doesn’t get much better than some of this week’s awesome comics.

Today’s episode is a deep-dive interview with one of Canada’s longtime pop culture tastemakers Mark Askwith, a producer, writer, reader and at one point, a critical seller and recommender of comic books. As a small town kid visiting Toronto for the first time in the early 80s, Randall’s client – storekeeper discussions with Mark, who was managing The Silver Snail, were critical introductions to any number of artists, writers, characters and titles. Mark went on to signal boost his influence at Prisoners of Gravity and SPACE, setting a high bar for Canadian pop culture journalism and documentary…

No guests today, but there is a lot of grappling with many issues – in every sense of the word – collecting and thinking about Wonder Woman as depicted in comics over the years, particularly by the artists tasked with depicting this beloved DC character. Come for the info but stay for the awkward moments as two straight white guys discuss gendered thinking and comic book-styled sexualizing as best they can…

With our special guest Rob Currie rejoining us, we go way back to wrap our heads around some of DC’s immediate reactions to the industry-crushing effects of Seduction of the Innocent. With comics code in play, the world around the dynamic due changes, and we end up finding new reasons to buy a bunch of awesome Batgirl titles. Is it all about the artist? Check out this episode and see for yourself.

Isaac and Randall invite you to enjoy documented video evidence of their having sneaked into the Batcave of lifelong collector and Batmaniac Rob Currie, where they saw all the things and did not touch (unless asked…) Included is our first interview with Rob, where he shares some of his origin story. It turns out, some of us were actually born this way!

This is our first collector spotlight, and it’s a good one. Local Batmanic Rob Currie is a lifelong collector of all things Dark Knight who doesn’t just buy every title and lock it away – he actually reads his comics: even the ones he shouldn’t be touching without gloves! In a socially distanced visit to the studio, we get a chance to touch some of Rob’s key issues ourselves, including an impossibly rare, one-of-a-kind comic that you will not see anywhere else in the world.
