This program’s emphasis is on how to communicate using terminology that our patients easily understand. Science and statistics regarding periodontal disease are important but not always the most effective way to explain to a patient how their oral infection directly affects their overall health. When clinicians communicate effectively, patients say YES to treatment, take ownership of their infection, and play a larger role in their treatment.

About the speaker: Tosha Kozloski is a dental hygienist, clinical coach, and speaker. She’s a science nerd at heart with a passion for connecting how our mouth directly affects our body. Tosha has had the honor of teaching seminar style training to offices across the United States for the past decade. Through this experience, she found a couple obstacles in this conventional format. First, many practices that attended these high-level seminars had difficulty implementing the new information into their practice, and second, if the team members who attended the seminar left the practice, they took their newfound knowledge and know-how with them. If most dentist did not have such a hard time getting to restorative in dental school they may have learned more in undergraduate periodontics. Be that as it may this lecture will give the generalist guidelines for referrals as well as information on what can be expected from their specialist and what is simply not predictable. By the end of this lecture the general dentist will resume their rightful place as the quarterback or director of their patients care and not the other way around.
