Had an amazing time taking with female entrepreneur and South Asian bridal beauty expert, Shirley Wu.

We had an opportunity to listen to her story. We start off talking about how being a part of the Hakka Chinese community in India, played an important role in how she got involved in the beauty industry in her early teenage years. Her story takes across multiple countries in the Indian sub-continent over multiple decades, and even a war that required her to make harrowing escape from Bangladesh, during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Eventually she found herself in Lahore, Pakistan, where she spent 12 years running a beauty salon. Today, she lives in Markham, Ontario, where she has spent the last few decades building her beauty business into multiple beauty spas throughout the Greater Toronto Area, along with other entrepreneurial ventures around coaching and training the next generation of beauty bridal experts.

In tonight's podcast episode, we had Asad, the founder of Decibel, talk about the ongoing developments with vendor deposit policies that have been taking place over the last month.

Although Asad has personally not been involved in the wedding industry for quite some time now, he played a role in partnering with 140 vendors, to help vendors make their policies more flexible in the wake of COVID19. Since then, a lot has happened in the current environment, which has left both vendors and couples in a state of uncertainty. In this episode. Asad and I had the opportunity to talk about  the following:

1. His team’s involvement in pulling off a feat of releasing an updated postponement policy, in partnership with 140 vendors.

Our host, Kamran, recently connected with Bilal on the sub-Reddit, r/DesiWeddings/ . After hearing about his story of getting married in March 2020, the PlanEvents.ca team decided to bring him on as a guest to this podcast episode. In this episode, we learned about how Bilal met his wife on a trip back to Pakistan in 2018, and had their 3-day wedding festivities take place in the middle of March 2020, when COVID19 just started gaining prominence in the global media.

We discussed the many hurdles he had to overcome due to government orders and shut down many vendor and non-essential businesses, why he chose to not postpone or cancel his events, and how he adapted his wedding events to the current COVID19 environment. We also talked about some more practical aspects of meeting your partner overseas, maintaining a long distance relationship, and shrinking wedding guest lists down to adhere to government orders around social distancing.
