In this podcast we discuss Catherine and Anna’s work developing academic practices to widen participation and reflect on how the principles of their practice can be transferred to other disciplines.

Dr Catherine Queen is a Lecturer in Planning in the Department of Geography and Planning, School of Environmental Sciences. Having worked in private practice for 30 years as a Town Planner and Environmental Planner, Catherine has a particular focus on practice led teaching through engaging her students with real world projects and working with external partners. Her previous research has focussed on marginality, stigma and the representation of seldom-heard voices in Planning and Catherine is keen to train future Planning professionals who can work with, and for, the public by expanding her student’s knowledge beyond their own lived experience to create inclusive and accessible places.

Dr Anna Smielewska has joined the Virology team as a consultant in 2021 and has been the Clinical Director for Infection and Immunity since 2022. Anna’s main interest is in infections in the Immunosuppressed and Paediatrics and she provides Virology cover for both Clatterbridge and Alder Hey. She has an appointment as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, furthering research in Virology in general, as well as these specific areas. Anna is keen to expand the I&I diagnostic range, meeting new challenges and emerging infections through collaborations with other centres, academia and industry, delivering the best service to our patients. Anna’s other interest is teaching, and she is currently completing her PGCAP course with the University of Liverpool, with a view of bringing these transferrable skills into her role as Clinical Director. Outside of work, Anna has two daughters, two cats, a partner who is also a Virologist, and practises yoga and Body Combat. She is looking forward to finding out more about her local community, having moved to the area during the pandemic.

Dr Amal Abu-Bakare is a lecturer in the politics of race and decolonial studies at the University of Liverpool and a Visiting Fellow at the University of South Wales’ International Centre for Policing & Security. She is a former doctoral student at Aberystwyth University’s Department of International Politics who successfully defended her thesis on 6 November 2020. As a Saudi-born Nigerian dual citizen of Canada and the United Kingdom, Abu-Bakare is interested in all things international, particularly food and politics. Her current research profile remains centred on using anti-colonial IR theory to explore how North American and European political/security institutions continue to empower racially configured exclusions and terror.

In this podcast we chat with Jen, Gemma and Jason about their recent Sir Alistair Pilkington Award for Teaching Excellence awarded for their development of Life Sciences students’ digital fluency and employability at scale through the design and implementation of authentic assessment.

Jen Delaney is a Lead Career Consultant in the careers and employability team. She works with academics to embed employability onto the curriculum across the faculty of Health and Life Sciences and develops extra-curricular opportunities for students to enhance their employability. Jen is also involved in the Unlock your Potential (UP) inclusion offer within Careers & Employability, which aims to develop career management skills to specific student groups to level the playing field as they plan for their future employment.

Gemma Wattret is a lecturer in Microbiology and Programme Director for the BSc Microbiology at the School of Life Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Gemma is on a Teaching and Scholarship pathway and has experience of teaching across all years of study. Gemma’s research interests are in Skills Development, Inclusivity and Widening Participation.

Jason Steers is a Communications and Engagement Project Officer within the careers and employability team. Part of Jason’s role is working with the range of digital employability tools that the University of Liverpool has access to in order to ensure that all students have sufficient access to these during their time at university and beyond. These include Handshake and Shortlist.Me, both of which were utilised within this assessment.

In this podcast we chat with Vikki about her recent Learning and Teaching Fellowship awarded for her innovative development of blended practice-based learning placements.

Vikki Barnes-Brown is a lecturer and lead practice placement tutor within the Occupational Therapy Programme at the School pf Health Sciences.

She started her career working for the NHS, as an occupational therapist within adult services before moving to community paediatrics, as an occupational therapist, service manager and clinical lead. Working predominantly with children aged 0-19 years with a range of conditions and providing operational management to the therapy service.

Vikki moved to the University 9 years ago. Practice placements has been a large part of her role and she is currently the national chair of the Practice Placement Tutors Forum for the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

Terry McNulty is Professor of Management and Corporate Governance at the University of Liverpool Management School and Associate Dean (International). He has a track record of research excellence and institutional leadership developed over three decades in Russell Group Universities and Schools of Business and Management Studies (Liverpool, Leeds and Warwick). 

John Green is the ULMS Study Abroad & Internationalisation Officer and has been working in the field of International Education since 2013; starting out as an International Strategy intern and latterly an International Projects Coordinator for Manchester Metropolitan University before joining the Management School in 2017 and completing his Masters in Public Administration and obtaining a qualification Project Management. 

Dr Dane Anderton is the Director of ULMS MBA Programmes and Director of Studies for the Liverpool MBA. Dane manages the strategic and operational aspects of the MBA to ensure that students have the best possible student journey whilst studying at ULMS. Dane works with a number of researchers and teaching faculty who input and deliver on our MBA. He is also responsible for the MBA's role in maintaining triple accreditation for the Management School (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS).

Dr Severina Cartwright is a Lecturer in Marketing, the Global Opportunities Academic Lead for the University of Liverpool Management School and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is also Freeman of the City of London and Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors. 

Dr. Ahmed Al-Abdin is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Programme Director for BA Marketing at The University of Liverpool Management School. He specialises in branding, services research, health marketing and internationalisation aimed to enhancing the student experience and school/University strategic outcomes.

In this podcast we chat with Rachel and Natalie about strategic change and, even though change is often difficult, how it can be managed using the right methodology.

Rachel Parkes has worked in project management for over 15 years with experience in local government working on education and regeneration projects and programmes and then more recently spending the last 9 years at the University of Liverpool. Rachel joined the University to project manage the student experience set up of the London campus before getting involved in business improvement projects within Student Administration and Support and leading the first Wellbeing Strategy and Wellbeing Week project. Rachel’s current role is Head of Project and Programme Management which involves developing the methodology for project and programmes, acting as a change manager for projects and supporting the team of project professionals in managing change. Rachel loves all things project and still gets chance to get stuck in when needed like the recent CAMPUS Shield COVID response and recovery project which received national recognition and was shortlisted for an APM award.

Natalie Carpenter has worked at the University of Liverpool for three years after completing her undergraduate degree at the institution. Natalie’s first role was as a Graduate Trainee which gave her the opportunity to work in four different areas across the organisation and gain an understanding of the wide range of support professional services colleagues offer. During this time Natalie contributed to projects around recruitment, outreach and sustainability, and enjoyed the opportunity to work with colleagues to deliver improvements for staff and students. This influenced Natalie’s decision to join the Strategic Change department as a Project Support Officer, where she is currently working on the PS Futures Programme.
