The Diceology Podcast

The Witness Protection Services in Spokane, WA. gets a brand new client. Kurt Renfro. He's a mid-level super-villain F.K.A Bone from the east. He's settling into his new life in the WitSec program.

Welcome to our run of Champions Now by Ron Edwards and Hero Games. Charles Picard is playing Kurt Renfro. We start with me monologuing about what we're doing then Charles and I jump right into our first session of Champions Now. We walk around a day in Kurt's new life Now and engage some of the game's mechanics.

Here's a look at the Situations bought for Kurt Renfro/Bone

• 10 Secret ID: Bone, mid-level East Coast villain
• 20 Psych Lim (happens a lot, irrational): Can’t stand to see the Strong take advantage of the Weak
• 10 Hunted: Detective Armstead, Spokane PD (one person, manipulative)
• 15 Hunted: “Local Talent” (small group, ordinary, murderous)
• 20 Hunted: The Old Gang (small group, inc. superpowers, manipulative)
• 10 DNPC: Kendra from AA (young son, addictive personality, monitored by Child Protective Services)
• 10 Unusual Looks 11- : Unsettling Aura (BAD DUDE… Ex-con, Ex-cop, Ex-military, Ex-something where people get hurt)
• 5 Unluck: 1d6

Patreon backers, look for the Big Damn Hero Meta-game episode. I'll cover my early thoughts about Champions Now, prep work, and how it all pannned out along with some extra commentary from Charles.

Next Issue: 3-Pain and you're out!

Today we welcome game designer, Beau Sheldon, to the show to talk about his life in gaming. Beau is the creator of Script Change and the author behind Thoughty! He has created several games, the most recent and dear of these being Turn. Beau explains his family background and upbringing and how these have informed creating and playing games in his life. Turn is essentially an exploration of the feelings of alienation and fear he experienced in a small town growing up. It deals with ideas of privilege and hiding, shapeshifting and courage. We discuss games more broadly and Beau offers some thoughts on what makes a great game. Our conversation covers design, writing, storytelling and connecting to the characters and themes. From there, the interview moves into the online communities and platforms and which of these are best suited for certain users — Beau expresses a great love of Itch and the community that gathers on the website. We discuss conventions, which one Beau is most excited to attend, getting more exposure for lesser-known games and utilizing Beau's platform for interviews to do this. Our wonderful chat gets finished off on the topic of a dream game table, and why Beau always gravitates towards the 'himbo' characters when selecting who to play with! For all this and more from a truly devoted player and creator from the gaming community, be sure to join us for this episode of Diceology!

Max and I continue playing D&D using the Old school Essentials from Necrotic Gnome. Max is playing Priest the Cleric of the god of Ahrepo. We are using the Mad Lands 'rulings'. Priest and Jefferies track the gnolls to an old village and descend into the crypts beneath. I'm using The Church of Morlorrim for inspiration for the crypts beneath the village.
