How did we get to the place where so many of us are obsessing about food, trying to control our bodies, and being hypervigilant about the structure of our diets?
As children many of us started out trusting ourselves. Though we weren't conscious of this trust, the actions we took were flexible, adaptive. We ate when we got hungry and stopped when we were full OR when we got distracted with something as a child.
It isn't until comments are made about our bodies or we're questioned about what we're eating or how much, or our caregivers try to micromanage our eating and weight that we begin to suffer mistrust of food and our bodies.
Regaining that trust, especially if we have spent years on restrictive diets or even trying to control food and our bodies (but wouldn't say we are "dieting"), means practicing having 100% unconditional permission to eat.
While this sounds terrifying to anyone who has controlled food for most of their lives, biologically, emotionally, and psychologically, it's necessary.
* We crave foods more when we tell ourselves we can't have them.
* We set up the ripe conditions for LAST SUPPER eating when we do end up eating a food we've labeled as "forbidden" or "off limits" (we eat more and more of it, often to the point of uncomfortable fullness b/c we believe we can't have it for a long time again).
* When we eat a food that we've deemed "bad," we feel guilty and the focus of our eating experience is guilt rather than the pleasure/satisfaction that's necessary for us to stop eating!
