  • Sergio Matina - Fifty Years of DJ Culture, Radio Legacy, and Artistic Passion on the Virtual Sessions 9/11/25
Summary In this Virtual Sessions episode, Sergio Matina joins from Milan to share his remarkable journey as a DJ, producer, and radio pioneer. For Sergio, being behind the decks is more than entertainment—it is art. He describes mixing as painting, with tracks as his colors and the crowd as his canvas. His long career has taken him from Italy’s top clubs to radio shows syndicated in 30 countries, including his celebrated format Tendencia Sessions. Reflecting on his beginnings, Sergio recalls buying his first records in the mid-1980s and the life-changing night in Florence when he first encountered house music through Nicky Siano. Determined to understand this new sound, he searched record shops until he built his collection and became one of the earliest house DJs in Italy. His passion for intimate clubs remains, where the energy exchange between DJ and audience defines the experience, contrasting with the spectacle of festivals. A passionate critic of phone use in clubs, Sergio shares stories of stopping his sets to demand people put their devices away and focus on dancing. For him, the dancefloor is sacred—a hedonistic, tribal, and spiritual space that should be lived, not filmed. He sees clubs as vital cultural spaces where music unites people beyond wealth or status. Sergio also discusses his label Tendenzia Records and his new project Ootrom, blending house with jazz, soul, and slower BPMs. He emphasizes that promotion, marketing, and gigs remain the lifeblood of a DJ’s career, offering guidance to young producers: humility, passion, and self-awareness. Outside music, he prioritizes health, meditation, and connecting with local cultures when touring, always seeking authenticity in food and community. • Ryan Auhl - Building Relentless Beats, Event Safety, and Global Expansion on the Virtual Sessions 9/3/25
Summary In this Virtual Sessions episode, Ryan Auhl joins host Darran Bruce from Phoenix to talk about his role as a partner at Relentless Beats and the journey from small-scale events to producing over 500 shows annually. Ryan reflects on how he started working with founder Tom Turner in 2010, growing from freelance design work to co-leading one of the largest independent promoters in the United States. What began as a hobby evolved into a full-fledged company producing massive festivals like Gold Rush, Decadence, and Phoenix Lights. Ryan shares how Relentless Beats operates in multiple markets, partnering with local teams in Albuquerque, Honolulu, and New York while keeping Arizona as the central hub. He highlights the thousands of people it takes to pull off large-scale shows, describing them as “traveling circuses” that come together for just a few hours but require months of planning. For him, success lies in constant questioning, improving processes, and remembering that the industry is ultimately a people business. The conversation touches on event safety, which Ryan calls a top priority. He outlines how security, medical staff, fire departments, police, and Relentless’ own Rangers collaborate to ensure fans make it home safe. He also addresses ticket prices, explaining that revenue goes directly into paying the artists, crews, and infrastructure that make these productions possible. From stories of streakers at Phoenix Lights to the debate over cell phone use at concerts, Ryan reflects on the culture surrounding live events. He shares inspiration from artists like Zedd and business leaders who shaped the U.S. dance music boom, while also expressing excitement for new destinations and food adventures with his wife. For Ryan, the most rewarding part is seeing fans connect with music in safe, unforgettable environments. His passion quickly grew into a full-time career in radio, production, and eventually television. The conversation explores his entrepreneurial ventures, including launching a DJ entertainment company, starting Rhythm City DJ School in South Florida, and leading USA Breaking, a nonprofit promoting breakdancing competitions nationwide. A proud South Florida native, Meecah's sound is an unmistakable blend of soulful R&B infused with vibrant '80s pop influences, drawing comparisons to legends like Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars.  This unique sonic tapestry will be fully unveiled in 2025 with the release of her highly anticipated debut EP, For Your Love. • Redman: Cannabis Advocacy, Unity, and Music Legacy on the Mobile Sessions 8/16/25
In this dynamic Virtual Session of The DJ Sessions, host Darran Bruce sits down with iconic rapper, entrepreneur, and cannabis advocate Redman at Cantana Fest 2025. Known worldwide for his groundbreaking contributions to hip hop, Redman dives into an equally impactful mission—fighting for cannabis reform through the United Empowerment Party (UEP), the first federally approved cannabis political party. Redman discusses the importance of unity within the cannabis industry, emphasizing that collaboration and shared goals are the key to real progress. He outlines UEP’s mission to de-schedule cannabis, arguing that simply moving it to Schedule III is insufficient. By fully removing it from federal scheduling, opportunities would open for research, transportation, fair business practices, and most importantly, freeing incarcerated individuals still serving time for cannabis-related charges. The conversation touches on the role of misinformation and outdated perceptions, with Redman highlighting cannabis as a medicine with over 400 beneficial components—many yet to be discovered. He shares his belief that education is crucial for lawmakers and the public alike, while stressing the need to keep large corporations from monopolizing the industry once federal approval arrives. Beyond advocacy, Redman reflects on community, culture, and the power of numbers in creating systemic change. He encourages grassroots participation, inviting supporters to join UEP’s movement and get involved in shaping policies that work for the people, not just profit. The episode also highlights Redman’s creative pursuits, including his new album Muddy Waters Too and ventures in merchandise and fashion, reinforcing his influence as both a cultural icon and social leader.   About Redman - Gruff and animated with bare-knuckled punchlines no matter how blunted, Redman is one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop, representing Newark and flying the funk flag throughout an enduring career that boasts seven gold and platinum albums. Reggie Noble was featured on a pair of EPMD tracks before broke through on his own in 1992 with Whut? Thee Album, a highly anticipated solo debut containing "Blow Your Mind" and "Time 4 Sum Aksion," boisterous singles that topped Billboard's rap chart. The unsettling Dare Iz a Darkside, relatively lucid Muddy Waters, and platinum triumph Doc's da Name 2000 all reinforced the rapper/producer's high standing, as did El Niño and Blackout! -- recorded respectively with Def Squad and Method Man -- throughout the '90s. Redman was even more visible during the early 2000s, hitting the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 again with Malpractice, taking his partnership with Method Man to the big screen with How High, and earning Grammy nominations as a featured artist on De La Soul's "Oooh." and Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty." Red launched his Gilla House label in 2007 with Red Gone Wild: Thee Album, and has followed it with three more LPs, including the alternately stern and celebratory Muddy Waters Too (2024). Redman, born Reginald Noble in Newark, started spinning records at parties and fashion shows at the age of 12, and a few years later began rhyming. He befriended , who became a mentor and took him along to parks and clubs, enabling him to develop and sharpen his skills as an imposing battle rapper. Later urged by  to share the mike onstage at an EPMD concert in Newark, Noble -- who was then DJ'ing for  -- gave in and essentially became Redman that night, shocking a crowd of familiar faces. Months later, a day after his father kicked him out for selling weed, Redman moved into 's Long Island apartment. He became fully embedded with EPMD and therefore the larger  collective, touring with the group whose pioneering funky and relaxed sound had inspired him to fully pursue hip-hop.  and Bobbito had showcased a live recording of Redman on their WKCR radio show, but it was EPMD's third album, 1990's Business as Usual, where Redman made his commercial debut, featured on the tracks "Hardcore" and "Brothers on My Jock." A five-track solo demo resulted in a solo deal with Def Jam. Redman was at the forefront of a crop of young, brash, and hungry signees that included  and , bolstering a roster of mostly established acts such as , , EPMD, and . In September 1992, Whut? Thee Album made instant impact as one of the era's most powerful rap debuts -- a mischievous, hard-hitting, set produced primarily by Redman and . First two singles "Blow Your Mind" and "Time 4 Some Aksion" both topped Billboard's rap chart (the latter unseated 's "Throw Ya Gunz") and pushed the album, marketed heavily to the streets and college campuses, to gold status within nine months. Meanwhile, Redman was highly sought for guest verses, production, and turntable work, assisting EPMD ("Head Banger"), , , and , as well as fellow Def Squad members  and , among others. Red returned in November 1994 with the descriptively-titled Dare Iz a Darkside, what began a streak of four number one rap albums -- all of which also placed no lower than 13 on the Billboard 200. Assisted by  and , Redman handled most of the sludgy production on his own, and a couple major singles in "Rockafella" and "Can't Wait," respective number ten and 11 hits on the rap chart, boosted album sales. Between those two singles, Red also hit number 12 with "Funkorama," taken from 's Insomnia compilation. Redman crowned the rap album chart four more times in the '90s. Muddy Waters, issued in December 1996, was leaner and sharper edged compared to Dare Iz a Darkside. It spawned "It's Like That (My Big Brother)," a number 11 rap hit featuring  partner , and "Whatever Man," an -assisted track that peaked at number three on the rap chart and narrowly missed the pop Top 40. The more colorful and buoyant Doc's da Name 2000, highlighted by "I'll Bee Dat!" and the  collaboration "Da Goodness," landed in November 1998 and within four months went platinum. The latter became Redman's fourth Top Ten rap hit as a headliner. Earlier the same year, Def Squad issued their lone album, El Niño, and almost topped the Billboard 200 with it. Red led the charge on album standout "Check N' Me Out" and traded verses with  on "Rhymin' wit' Biz." Three months before the end of the decade, Redman and Method Man unloaded their first LP as a duo, the number three Billboard 200 entry Blackout!, full-length proof of the rappers' natural chemistry. In addition to "How High," a number two rap single originally recorded for the soundtrack of The Show, Blackout! contained the number 14 rap single "Da Rockwilder." Both songs also factored into How High, the 2001 stoner comedy in which Method Man and Redman co-starred. In addition to his first major big-screen role as an actor, Redman further raised his profile in the early 2000s with featured appearances on two Grammy-nominated recordings: De La Soul's "Oooh." (for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group) and Christina Aguilera's "Dirty" (for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals). Between the two singles in May 2001, Redman released his fifth album, Malpractice, which entered the Billboard 200 at number four -- his highest position on the chart. The album's "Let's Get Dirty (I Can't Get in da Club)," with  as hype man, returned him to the rap Top Ten, and other tracks boasted guest spots from the likes of , , and Treach. Six years passed before his next album, but Redman was busy during the interim with a handful of mixtapes on his new Gilla House label, roles in films like Scary Movie 3 and Seed of Chucky, player character roles in several Def Jam-related video games, plus the sitcom Method & Red, among many other television appearances. In March 2007, Redman finally issued Red Gone Wild: Thee Album. Despite arriving at least three years after its originally scheduled date, Red Gone Wild went straight to number 13 on the Billboard 200 (number four on the R&B/hip-hop chart).  produced the rowdy highlight "Put It Down," and other notable productions were supplied by , , and longtime associates  and . Blackout! 2 appeared near the end of the decade and found Redman and Method Man picking up where they had left off with their first album as a duo. The sequel entered the Billboard 200 at number seven and the R&B/hip-chart in the second position. December 2010 saw the release of Redman's last Def Jam album. Titled Redman Presents...Reggie, the LP capped an uncommonly long rapper-label affiliation of nearly two decades. It immediately stuck out in the Redman catalog with its outgoing, guest-heavy approach and use of Auto-Tune. Moreover, it played out like a mixtape with a different producer or production team on each track. Redman enlisted a similarly diverse cast of associates for Mudface, his independent, -distributed eighth album, issued in November 2015. Also like Reggie, it cracked the Top Ten of the rap chart. Film and television roles continued, most notably as the host of Scared Famous, followed by an appearance in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and a recurring role on Power Book II: Ghost. Muddy Waters Too, the sequel to his 1996 album, and his first full-length in nine years, was issued on Christmas Eve 2024. The party atmosphere was exemplified by "Lite It Up," a nostalgic posse cut on which Redman was joined by , , , , and many more. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ’s/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. YORK on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/15/25 About YORK - Torsten Stenzel is one of the most successful dance producers of the 90s and 2000s with projects like "Sakin & Friends" (European top positions with "Braveheart", "Nomansland" etc.), "Taucher", "Ayla" (in cooperation with "Tandu"), "Suspicious", "NUKE", "Diver & Ace", "Red Light District“ and many more. At the end of the 90s the project "York" was born together with his brother Jörg Stenzel and immediately the first single "The Awakening" was a sensational success in all European countries (e.g. gold status in UK) and set a trademark with the typical "York" guitar.   With the second single "On The Beach" this success was extended even further and reached among others the Top 3 in the UK as well as chart positions all over Europe and the USA! Chris Rea was so enthusiastic about Stenzel's cover version - which, by the way, sold more units than his 1986 original - and supported the promotion with, among other things, a joint appearance on the British "Top Of The Pops" show. Numerous remixes (including Faithless) and collaborations with artists such as ATB ("Fields Of Gold") solidified the cult status of "York", which continues to this day. In the last 5 years he had a lot to do with his singing daughter "Au/Ra" (UK hit "Panic Room", Jax Jones "Miss you"), whom he looked after as manager and producer. He has been living on the small Caribbean island of "Antigua" for the last 16 years, where he also works as a consul for the Foreign Office, among other things. bOydestiny on The Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/2/25  About bOydestiny - Boydestiny was born in Hartford, Connecticut, as Michael Antonio Brocco to an Italian teenage mother, Maria Brocco and an African-American teenage father. The family, under financial pressure, could not keep Michael, and he was placed up for fostering.  A variety of foster families in the New Britain, Connecticut area helped to care for Michael in his very early youth including the Carter's and the Ward's. At age 10, Michael was placed in a loving home and raised by his adoptive Father, Robert Thornton, a single man residing in North Philadelphia. A young Michael, then took his current legal adopted name Michael Anthony Thornton. His first Philadelphia home was located at 2908 Diamond Street also known as the Henry O' Tanner home; as the famous African-American painter, known for the "Banjo Lesson"  lived their back in the late 1800's as did the famous black lawyer Raymond Pace Alexander and his equally accomplished wife Sadie Tanner Mossell.  Michael still currently owns that famous National Historic property which his father gave him when he passed in 2018.  Michael later moved from his O Tanner home and then resided in the West Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia on Carpenter Lane.  Before this, as a foster child in Connecticut, Michael showed early musical promise, playing the String Bass at the age of six at the Smith School and performing in various school activities.  At age ten, he took up trumpet and played well enough to participate in a Philadelphia citywide youth orchestra. Then, by age eleven, Michael found his true instrumental calling....the piano. By age 12 Michael was performing on the piano in the Philadelphia school district 6 musical festival where he 1st met James K. Lloyd the now famous pianist of "Pieces of a Dream". Mike quickly learned both the piano and the organ and joined his first band at age thirteen, which was called "Unique" .This group performed throughout the Philadelphia area and was featured on numerous Television shows such as "AM Philadelphia",  "Visions" and  "City Lights."   By age seventeen, Michael had written over twenty original musical pieces, many of which had lyrics. Michael attended Central High School for Boys (class 240) and then LaSalle College where he earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology.  By age 26 Michael had become a member of the smooth jazz group known as "Pieces of a Dream". He remained a member for ten years and traveled the world-over with them.   As a highly gifted pianist, Michael offered his keyboard playing services and in some cases vocal services to numerous famous and not-so-famous groups, in which he was able to perform with and/or share the stage with several artists and bands, including Kimberly Covington, Vincent Knight, Leon Evans, Eddie Baccus jr. Barbara Walker, Carla Benson, Lynn Randall, Stacy Mitchhart, Eddie Holman Sr., Pieces of A Dream, Marion Meadows, Alex Bugnon, Gladys Knight, George Benson, Jeff Lorber, Grover Washington jr., Cherelle, Alexander O Neal, Melisa Morgan, Queen Latifah, Phylis Hyman, Big Daddy Kane, Patti LaBelle, Freddie Jackson, Regina Belle, Bill Whithers and more.  By age 36,  Michael had returned to University and obtained his PhD in Cell and Molecular Genetics from the University of Pennsylvania; graduating with a 3.99 GPA. Less than 2% of the world's population has a doctorate. According to the US Census Bureau, only 1.2% of the US population have a PhD. This makes having a PhD very rare. This places bOydestiNy in a very special and unique club especially amongst those rare PhD holders that are also singers and musicians.   Some years after obtaining his doctorate; in January 2008, Michael  returned to music and penned the tune entitled 'You Got Me Going,' also known as the "Emma Watson Song". This song featured Michael not only on Piano but singing and rapping. Then, in March and April 2008, he and his video production crew from FSU film school (Robert Sackman) and some Miami dancing talent (Jake Kodish, Larry Albright, Seth Gordon) began film production for the "Emma Watson Song" music video, ending on April 6. The final video product was released to worldwide acclaim on April 15, 2008 and went viral on the internet and also garnered some radio airplay. This represented the first public use of his performer pseudonym "bOydestiNy" and the first time the world had seen Michael as a multi-instrumentalist as well as a good singer and rapper.  After this initial public release of the Emma Watson Song, Michael, bOydestiNy, worked on completing his 1st album, 'Modern Times,' released in June 2008. That CD/album had a mixture of songs that genre-wise fall under the general umbrella of Pop and R&B, but they went far beyond this. bOydestiNy's most recent album, "Love is Forever," was released on May 1, 2024 in the US. And is an amazing collection of songs all about the emotion of love. Currently on bOydestiNy's YouTube Channel the artist has managed to reach close to 2.3 Million Views  (2,300,000) for his collection of original music -music videos presented there. Some of the many influences on bOydestiNy's music have been Michael Jackson, T-Pain, and John Legend. Some other influences include people like Lenny Kravitz and modern groups like the Jonas Brothers. Also, OutKast released SpeakerBoxx, which expanded their 'rock' side. Michael also wanted to explore this side, leading to the song he composed called 'Girl with the Golden Eyes". That song also showed the instrumental virtuosity of bOydestiNy as he played all the instruments on the cut, including drums, keyboards, and electric and acoustic guitar.  Muse-wise of course Emma Watson was and remains an inspiration to his songwriting. bOydestiny is now working on additional music videos to support all his albums and is presently considering US and international touring options for the summer and/or Fall  season.
