Well, here I am, spouting some more nonsense, but also some tips on preparing, just in case.
General Info: Geiger Counter:
Counts per minute - 8-25 - normal current levels
60 - low level radiation, but only converts to 0.5 uSv per hour
100 - That is high, but not worth panicking.
150 - leave area if possible. If not, again, don't panic.
500 or more - ideally find area with lower dose if possible.
Water - Bottled / sealed is best. The water in your toilet tank (not the bowl) is also safe, as is the water in your water heater. If tap water is all that is available, it is more important to stay hydrated than to worry about the amount of contamination. Obviously if there has been overflow contamination into reservoir, or pipe / infrastructure damage, it may be best to boil.
Food: Canned food / non perishables are good to have. Share with those who don't have food. It is more important to come together as a community, as you will all need one another. Support and be supported. Assuming you have no power, consume perishable foods first.
