In a previous episode, “Why Did Teenagers Rock ‘n’ Roll During the Pandemic of 1957”?, I noted the impact that “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” by Huey “Piano” Smith had. It sounds as if “This Is A War” is the first salvo marketing a popular message against COVID restrictions for the younger generation. It includes freedom, liberty, closed borders, and religion, specifically, the Judeo-Christian American tradition.

The “Curtis” LP including “Choice of Colors” sold well at the time charting at number one on the Billboard Black albums for five non-consecutive weeks and at number 19 on the Billboard Pop album charts. Only the single “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below, We’re All Going to Go” charted in the United States; however, an edited version of “Move On Up” would spend 10 weeks in the top 50 of the UK singles chart. In 1972, the French Academy of Jazz awarded Mayfield’s “Curtis” prize for best R&B record. Mayfield won a Grammy Legend Award in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. He is a double inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Impressions in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He also was a two time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.

“Respect” is a fine film; it compellingly depicts the formative years of one of America’s most beloved recording and concert artists. But this is more than just a pretty picture. Is “Respect” the anecdote to CRT? “Respect” detonates the core tenets of critical race theory. “Respect” spans the early 1950s to the early 70s. We meet young Aretha as a little girl who sings to a group of adult guests in the Detroit home of her father, Baptist minister C. L. Franklin. Reverend Franklin’s living room is filled with several dozen of his and Mama Franklin’s friends and loved ones. They are sharply dressed professionals. The men sport suits. The women sparkle in gowns. They’re elegant, poised, well spoken, educated, and prosperous. Even when things were terrible for so many African-Americans in the 1950s, they held their heads high, with dignity.

During the Civil Rights Era how were Latino rhythms marketed to a popular audience? Free market capitalism popularized Latino music to the general record buying public and two styles in particular arose during the classic pop era. Latino rock is rock music performed by Mexican American groups or music with themes derived from it’s culture. Latino rock, to a great extent, does not refer to any single style or approach. Some of these groups do not sing in Spanish at all, or use any specific Latin instruments or sounds. The sub genre is defined by the ethnicity of its performers, and as a result covers a wide range of approaches.

Use the same SMART litmus test you used for goals for evaluating each of the KPI’s your team comes up with. It’s not always easy to put data to use. When it comes to making the most of their insights, too many businesses fall into familiar traps that limit the impact of their existing data and stand in the way of them making informed marketing decisions. There are plenty of ways to do data wrong, but these traps generally fall into three camps: tracking marketing data, but doing it incorrectly. Tracking marketing data, but not tracking the right things. Not tracking marketing data at all.

The space race and rock ‘n’ roll launched at the same time, so it’s no surprise musicians marketed UFOs and the skies for inspiration. While some tunes have focused on rocket men and space cowboys, others have ruminated on the idea of extraterrestrial beings invading earth’s orbit. Early rock hits went the route of the novelty song, “Flying Saucers Rock and Roll” and “The Purple People Eater,” while classic rock artists such as David Bowie wrote about UFOs in a grander context.
