Over the years, head injuries and concussions have become a more prominent studied topic in contact sports today such as boxing, MMA, rugby and American football. With films such as the Will Smith starring 'Concussion' and well publicised NFL case studies such as Aaron Hernandez being brought to light, increased amount of studies and research have been done to investigate the effects trauma and blows to the head have on Physical and mental health.
I sat down with former professional Kick boxer and mixed martial artist Gary Turner to discuss how he traded in punching and kicking people in the head, to now studying the detrimental effects it has. A former 13 time world champion over three different sports, Gary is now doing a pHD from Oxford Brooks university on the impact of head injuries in contact sports such as boxing, rugby and American football. Stay tuned as Gary touches upon his earlier career as a professional fighter (having beat the likes of Tank Abbott), why he chose to look into head injuries and what more can be done to make sports such as boxing safer for young athletes.
