President Trump seeks to change the US Constitution by executive order, a clear violation of that very document. On the first day of his second term, he ended birthright citizenship by executive order. Granted, over 20 states immediately filed lawsuits and the negation of the 14th amendment’s granting of citizenship to all those born on US soil won’t take effect unless the legal challenges are all dismissed. Here’s a line-by-line breakdown of Trump’s executive order.

As this second Trump presidency unfolds and brings out the worst of oligarchy, we must be prepared to speak truth to power. We saw a powerful example of that on Inauguration Day. The Right Reverend Mariann Budde delivered an inaugural sermon on unity, patriotism, and compassion. And she addressed Trump directly in a plea for mercy towards the citizens and residents of this great country. She’s an example for us all.

Matt Rothschild joins us as cohost for the day. We need to talk about hand signals and the meanings they carry. Like we frequently recognize a welcoming beckon or a dismissive shooing, there are certain unmistakable things we can do with our hands. No one in our culture would mistake an extended middle finger on an otherwise closed fist as anything other than rude- potentially unless among very close friends. Similarly, a single raised flat handed salute from the chest only looks like one thing: the Nazi or Roman salute, an absolutely overt fascist symbol. And that’s exactly what Elon Musk performed at the inauguration for the 47th President of these United States. Not to be misunderstood, Musk repeated the gesture. Beyond our reckoning, experts in the matter assert: what Musk did was perform the Nazi salute. If those who abhor the gesture won’t convince you, look to the actual self-declared fascists who are celebrating. And that is absolutely unacceptable. Don’t look away or make excuses. Elon Musk is showing us exactly who he is and what he wants. Do NOT let him have it.

The second part of the Morning Show on January 22 featured information on the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge with staff from the Brewer Public Library.

The focus of the first half of the Morning Show on January 22 was on Highland Schools as we were provided with an update.

John Nichols, journalist for Madison’s Cap Times and The Nation magazine, joins us. We haven’t talked with John since before the election, so we start catching up. Top of mind for us today is The Great Grift, how Trump’s second presidency is shaping up to be one big scheme for the rich to pilfer the poor of even more money. Not to mention foreign entities, who can now buy Trump directly through his memecoin– they don’t even need to stay at his hotels! John’s takeaway? This all threatens the very foundation of democracy- the people’s faith in their elected officials to pursue the best interests of the people, not just themselves. And Trump’s designation of Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations? Is that also a shakedown scheme à la “protection money” that can be pain through crypto? Buckle up, everyone, this is day 2.

This hour, we’re locked in on the slew of pardons issued by President Trump for those who engaged in a violent insurrection against the United States of America on January 6th, 2021. Of those pardoned, 11 are Wisconsinites. These 11 Wisconsin residents participated in the most overt attempt to disrupt our Union since the Civil War. Several directly assaulted Capitol police and shared proud recollections of their exploits on social media. Now, their slates are wiped clean and the history of that day is being re-written. Even many Republicans lawmakers voiced their alarm at the breadth of Trump’s pardons for the J6 rioters. They shouldn’t be surprised, OF COURSE Trump would fully pardon his biggest fans, duh!

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, our favorite Delano Democrat, joins us to break down the news of the day.

Today, Donald Trump was inaugurated as this nation’s 47th President. It feels like a dark moment for our country, especially with the lineup of billionaire oligarchs immediately behind him for the event. Further darkening the moment, aspiring shadow-president Musk delivered not one, but TWO renditions of the seig heil Nazi salute. We really can’t think of anything else to call it. A dark portent that leaves us shocked and horrified. Additionally, last night Trump appeared to thank Elon Musk for winning the state of Pennsylvania for him… through his extensive knowledge of the voting machines...

We’re admittedly struggling to find some light today. Which makes it all the more vital that we find it. So we end the show with our recurring segment “tell me something good.”
