The Morning Show on January 16 featured staff from the Ithaca School District as they provided an update on the latest happenings in the district.
Guest: Phil NeeMatt Rothschild joins us as cohost today.
Today, Pam Bondi, President-elect Trump’s pick for Attorney General faced Senate questioning. Unlike the nominee for Secretary of Defense, Bondi actually seems to possess the necessary skills and experience to fulfill the leadership position. Unfortunately, just like her fellow Cabinet nominee, Pam’s primary qualifying merit for the position is her undying loyalty to Donald Trump. She represented Trump in his first impeachment trial of his first administration. Bondi campaigned with him in 2020 and pushed the Big Lie that the election was stolen from him. Even today in her hearing, she refused to say even once that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Her inability to commit to being impartial and independent from Trump deeply worried Democratic senators today. And it deeply worries us.
We end the show with a moment reflecting on the healing majesty of nature with Wendell Berry’s poem “The Peace of Wild Things” in our recurring Tell Me Something Good segment.

Today, the combating parties in Israel and Gaza reached a historic ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire agreement, brokered with mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, follows President Biden’s proposed plan from May 2024. After over 15 months of devastating war, we take a few moments to cherish this relief. If followed to completion, this deal will lead to a permanent ceasefire. There is not, however, any language in the deal to work towards a true permanent solution that creates a state for the Palestinian people. Without a path to self-determination, we fear a return to this situation before too long.

Guests: Matt RothschildThe Morning Show on January 15 featured the Community Players of Southwest Wisconsin. They were on the program to talk about an upcoming fundraising event and future productions.
Guest: Phil NeeThe United States Department of Defense is a massive, complex organization that employs over 3 million Americans with an annual budget of nearly $1 trillion. The person to lead this machinery must have extensive experience with managing vast groups with competing needs. They must have strength of character to represent our country at home and abroad. In short, they must not be Pete Hegseth, who faced his Senate confirmation hearing today. In this hour, Dom and Jess listen to some of the questioning of Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Defense. The United States Senate bears responsibility for advising the President on their nominees before consenting- OR NOT. Despite his lack of qualifications, he seems poised to skate by with a bare minimum confirmation vote.
We end by reminding ourselves and each other the world isn’t ALL terrible in a semi-regular segment: Tell Us Something Good!

Starting off with some Overtime with Maggie Daun, we’ve got a busy day. Finally, after long delays and foot dragging, we now have access to HALF of Jack Smith’s report on Donald Trump’s felony indictments. You can read for yourself Jack Smith’s final report on the January 6th, 2021 insurrection instigated and authorized by the 45th and soon to be 47th President. The document itself is unprecedented, laying out how a former POTUS would have been convicted of federal felony charges to disrupt the peaceful transition of power. Yet we’ll never have that fulfillment of justice. Because there was no precedent for charging a former President with insurrection. And, the legal terms for insurrection didn’t quite line up with what happened that day. The case highlights the multiple systems of justice in this country. And it should serve as an alarm bell to call us all to action in this new administration.

The Morning Show on January 14 featured an update from the Riverdale School District. Staff from school district talked about the referendum and how the start to the second half of the school year has been going.
Guest: Phil NeeHarvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB joins us for the hour. We begin by addressing a caller from the end of last hour who asked, regarding funding disaster relief for the victims of the California fires, are we all in this together or not? Harvey, in classic Delano Democrat fashion, replies with wisdom from FDR’s presidency. In his New Deal, FDR instituted the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to provide jobs, mitigate climate disasters, and provide for the future of our natural world. In short, his answer to our caller is that while we should all be in this together, we are not, due to the economic royalists. Who are those? Well, you’ll have to read FDR’s speech given to the Democratic Convention upon his second nomination for Presidency.

Guests: Harvey KayeWe are one week out from Trump’s second inauguration and chaos already abounds. Fires continue blazing in California, with death tolls continuing to rise and tens of thousands of acres consumed by fire. As national elected figures struggle to put together an aid package, many Republicans seek to impose conditions. From policy changes in California to appeasing Trump with a debt ceiling increase, these strings are literally withholding lifesaving aid at a moment of extreme crisis. And it’s a dark portent of what’s to come in the next Trump administration.
Turning to Wisconsin matters, the new Legislative session announces the policies they’ll pursue. Republican Senate leader Devin LeMahieu affirms that Republicans are anti-abortion and anti-marijuana, no changes there. They’ll seek to restrict Wisconsinites access to abortion to 14 weeks and maintain our presence in the shrinking minority of non-legal weed states. Not surprising, but deeply disappointing and deeply misaligned with the will of Wisconsin citizens.
