Welcome to episode #24 of the DONESON podcast! Today we dive into one of the most important health issues that is not talked about enough: Mental Health. Many of us have struggled with mental health. Issues that range from loneliness to anxiety, depression, and even disorders such as bipolar and others. Whether your affliction is minor or severe, it's important that everyone understands that taking time to deal with your feelings is the key to better mental health. Often with a diagnosis, we look to medication to solve the problem. Although this is helpful in many instances, so is self-care. Self-care can look like many different things. Being protective of your time, not saying yes to all demands, doing activities that you enjoy alone or with friends. It can be an hour alone to read or even taking a day off work to rest. The point is that when you start to feel lost, drained or overwhelmed that you reach out, ask for help and take the time you need. Mental health is just as important as physical health but we need to continue moving the discussion into the mainstream. Listen in to better understand how mental health needs to be is everyone's concern.

Today on episode 22 of the DONESON podcast, we dive into one of the most prevalent diseases of current times: Cancer. Sadly, almost everyone has a loved one who has been affected by cancer. There are many different types of course and all are devastating but there is one particular type of cancer that has been put on the back burner for too long: Prostate Cancer. Here to help us bring it into the light is our guest host: Calvia Hill https://www.linkedin.com/in/calvia-hill-735a3b113 Mr. Hill is a 3-time prostate cancer survivor and is here to tell his story so that others may benefit from his knowledge. Prostate cancer is a silent killer, particularly in the African-American community. However, it is also a disease that if caught early, men can survive. With early testing, diagnosis and treatment, men can live a normal life. So why is it not talked about more? Especially amongst the black community? Perhaps the reluctance to visit the doctor comes from the fear of being sick, having ED issues or being told to abstain from sexual activity, is what holds people back. But these are temporary issues when your life is on the line. Catching prostate cancer in its early stages is the key to survival. But it can't be done until it becomes a more mainstream conversation within the community. Tests such as the PSA test are the key to survival. This can begin as early as age 38 or 40 and it saves lives. When prostate cancer is talked about openly amongst families, at church and in the community, more men will feel comfortable taking action. Health issues should never be taboo. It is our right and duty to ourselves and our loved ones to take the steps needed to ensure survival rates. Join us and our guest host to learn more and become proactive with your own health.
Welcome to episode #21 of the DONESON podcast! Today we begin our series on health and wellness, beginning with an in-depth look at diabetes. Here to help us understand this disease better, is our special guest Johnathan Davis https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-davis0627 Mr. Davis suffers from diabetes and will share with us; how it affects his life, his journey before and since his diagnosis, as well as some tips on how to manage the disease. There are two types of diabetes; Type 1 which is genetic and Type 2 which is often a later in life onset and is more closely linked to lifestyle choices. Although each are different in terms of onset, both greatly affect daily life. Being mindful of nutrition, avoiding alcohol and checking one's blood sugar either manually or via a continuous glucose pump all play a big part. If not taken care of properly, the body can deteriorate very quickly. Problems such as kidney and pancreas failure and constant pain are just some of the issues that arise. Ultimately, if not taken care of, diabetes can send the patient into a coma. This is a serious issue that makes it worth understanding the preventative steps. Regular health check-ups, avoiding a diet that is high in saturated fats and regular gentle exercise are all important measures to avoid diabetes. Listen in and learn more about diabetes and how you can do everything you can to avoid it.

This is Episode 18 of the DONESON podcast and it will blow your mind! Today we discuss anger and where it comes from. What causes us to anger? How does this powerful emotion affect us? Often, it is derived from the actions and words of others. It may seem obvious but words especially, have a power and a reach far beyond what we first imagine. And the results of those words can actually manifest, even years later, in our behaviour. So, when the people around you are getting angry, it's important to look deeper, behind the surface to find the source of that anger. Many times, it's not what is right in front of us but what has been buried deep for many years. Anger can often be fear in disguise. Learning to evaluate our anger and channel it differently can help us to make major changes in our lives and ultimately in our emotions.
