  • Health Activist Writers Challenge of WEGO Health
Health Care blog review and discussion, featuring WEGO Health activist blogs from Health Activist Writers Month Challenge (#HAWMC on Twitter). This Challenge involved thirty posts in 30 days by a host of Activists who advocate for specific diseases or causes.  Dr Synonymous blog was used as a Family Medicine Activist site for 30 posts. Dr Jonas marveled at the high quality of the writing and the important human message in each of the posts.  Life in a Puddle by a woman with hyperhydrosis was one of the most unique sites reviewed.  People with Crohn's Disease, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Scleroderma, Sjogren's Syndrome, Adrenal Insufficiency, and Fibromyalgia are mentioned.  Many others write in detail about their daily lives and the impact of a chronic disease.  I salute these powerful activists and their message.  A chat room allows listeners to comment and interact.

  • Thyroiditis; Finding the Beautiful, the Noble and the Sacred
Health Care blog, tweet and literature review and discussion, starting with patient blogs, including comments about Dr Synonymous blog.  Discussion includes reference to the past, present and future of Family Medicine in an extended conversation with Larry Bauer, MSW, MEd, Executive Director FMEC, Inc at the end of the regular show time for over thirty minutes.  Dr Jonas, your host will comment on the blogs and tweets starting with thyroiditis blogs and extended commentary about Hashimoto's thyroiditis. A tweet leads to comments about Mr. Rogers who was remembered with a PBS special (rerun?) this week at the time of what would have been his 84th birthday.  He attended Presbyterian seminary and developed a TV relationship with millions of children, always wanting them to know they mattered.  This is an example of life's beauty throu humanity.  Dr Jonas further comments on Stephen Ministries (www.stephenministries.org) which he was introduced to via a church sponsored workshop.  Seeking to reaffirm the humanity of the grieving in a "distinctively Christian way, lay persons are trained in Christian Caregiving.  This program leads to improved understandings of the Beautiful, the Noble and the Sacred aspects of life via training, experience and connection.  Movies that may help the grieving round out the regular show before the call from Mr. Bauer, a Family Medicine thought leader..

  • Grief, Rare Diseases, Family Medicine Workforce Problems
After a disclaimer, Dr Jonas, your host, congratulates the Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek, OH for their successful opening in February.  He introduces his coffee for the show:  Tulli's Kona Extra Bold from his Keurig coffee maker.  Timely comments about President Obama being in Dayton with the British Prime Minister while the show is recorded.  The time change (spring ahead) and March Madness distract Dr S a bit before he focuses on the blog post by Dr Fatty Finds Fitness.  Dr Fatty relates a very stressful family death and her grief closing her post with a request for prayer if the reader "is so inclined". Match Day results for senior medical students are introduced as a topic from The Future of family Medicine Blog, with preliminary results reviewed by Dr S.  Still not enough students choosing Family Medicine (8.4%).  Dr Jonas comments on workforce needs and The recent Dr S Blog post about closing down Fmily Medicine Training programs. Medical Mojave is next reviewed with a sick child and her personal risks for exacerbation of adrenal insufficiency which can flare up with stress. Anaphylaxing with Mast Cell Disease and others is briefly reviewed w/ thoughts of various stressors and adjusting her steroid dose.   Dr Laurie Edwards tweets/blog comments on her use of technology and social media to show her child's physician the breathing problem and use of tech to support her own care and rare disease site NORD. Dr Kenny Lin's blog Common Sense Family Doctor is about doctors knowledge about price of therapies and medication.  Healthcare etc. posts about red meat and Harvard paper/ flaws. Dr S post laments conflict between workforce needs and closure of Family Medicine training sites, one at a time. Dr Jonas expounds for several minutes.  Last is 20 tweet reviews, genomics "trialog" included w Dr Jonas opinion.

  • Diagnosing Fibromyalgia, New FDA Statin Warnings, FM Call
Health Care blog review and discussion, starting with Warm Socks (with RA) comments about scheduling and waiting for time with doctors.  Dr Jonas then reviews Deb's Fibromyalgia Blog which included her story about getting her diagnosis and changing medications across three or four clinical sites when her doctor died.  The host then talks about fibromyalgia diagnostic criteria changes from an article in Musculoskeletal Medicine.  These appear to allow more patient-doctor communication points that may a better understanding of each patient's situation and needs.  He also reviews The Singing Pen of Dr Jen's post about her paronychia, Dr Kenny Lin's Common Sense Family Doctor and Medical Student comments in The Future of Family Medicine blog, suggesting serious consideration of getting more four year Family Medicine training programs.  Dr Jonas ends with his Dr Synonymous post about after hours call in Family Medicine.  Strangely, the show again was interrupted by 8 successive disconnections from Skype, which may be annoying or amusing to the listener.
