  • Dr Synonymous: Viet Nam 40 Years Ago, Radiation, Nix Pharma, Herbs for Moods, FNP's
Dr S begins with a reflection on Viet Nam 40 years ago when he was a helicopter pilot for the Army engineers. Dewey Canyon II and Lam Son 719 were the combined US, ARVN (S. Vietnamese military) operations to cut the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and prove to the world that ARVN troops were ready to defend their country. This would further enable the US to pursue peace and/or US exit. Dr S, then Cpt Jonas in 1971 got a good view of the DC II operation while a few of his West Point classmates ('68) were in more intense areas of engagement. Cpt. Don Davis was notable in getting shot down 5 times (yes, FIVE) and rescued 5 times while airlifting ARVN troops into and out of hot LZ's (landing zones). Wikipedia has nice maps and detail about the two operations. Dr Carrie Nelson's Blog is reviewed for its radiation comments about CT scans and body scanners in airports. Sebastian writes well about Big Pharma ads polluting medical journals (and medical brains) in Future of Family Medicine Blog. Dr R Young nudges genomics as not yet worthy in American Health Scare also reviewed by Dr S. Dr S comments on his post about Collaboration with Family Nurse Practitioners. Our confluence of disciplines is needed to better serve the primary care needs of America. We need to upgrade to get it better and faster. Nurses still care and family doctors are hanging on but need someone like Cpt. Don Davis to commit to our purpose and help with the rescue. Thanks again Don and all members of West Point Class of 1968 for your commitment to America, each in his own way. Peace

  • Dr Synonymous: Blog Review-Patients, Med Students, Doctors; Marcus Welby, MD
Dr Synonymous greets listeners, gives show overview and disclaimer: We're not practicing medicine on the show, that must come from your own family doctor. A patient blog is reviewed from Sea Spray about pain control and the relationship with her urologist. Fog Be Gone by Penelope from Canada discusses her frustration about undiagnosed symptoms. She reviews Lyme Disease as a possibility, discussing how some tests are less accurate than others. Dr S then reads some glycemic load diet tips for breakfast from Rob Thompson, MD. Next is the difficult issue of professional behavior covered by Sebastian, one of the medical students who blogs via The Future of Family Medicine, in which he discusses the Wisconsin family physicians who were videotaped giving sick notes to protesting teachers in Wisconsin. He writes of advocacy and political involvement versus the professional role that he thinks should be separate from politics. Nest is a story from Dr Tom Sterns book, House Calls, in which Robert Young who played Marcus Welby, MD is a dinner guest of Dr Stern and his wife Glad when a patient /neighbor calls about her sick son wanting a prescription. Dr Stern pulls a delightful prank on the neighbor by having Marcus Welby make a house call on the neighbors. It ended well, too. Dr S follows that with physician blog reviews including The Singing Pen of Dr Jen, expressing concerns about apparent bias in advertising by a specialty group which wants people to bring children with asthma to them even though primary care physicians can take of them. The specialty frustrations are well reviewed by Dr Jen (also an Ohio State Med School grad). Dr Kenny Lin discusses the PSA test misuse as a screening test on The Common Sense Family Doctor. He reviews how the test is ineffective as a screening test (meaning to be used in people with no symptoms) and leads to much confusion. Last is Dr S with Hippocrates, Hope and Heart a post about teaching medical students and more.

  • Patient, Med Student, Physician Blog Review,5 Luv Languages, Pain Rx, Bible Food
Dr Synonymous introduction and disclaimer followed by blog review: Dr Fatty Finds Fitness has a meaningful Valentine's Day post about loving self and others. The med students (Chris wrote this one) at The Future of Family Medicine blog wrote about primary care physician shortages, underserved areas, medical school admissions committees, loan forgiveness and how to get future med students who will go into primary care. Dr S reads from The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman from the section on Receiving Gifts, with a focus on money and physical presence. He notes the list of 10 actions by a person whose mate likes to receive gifts as expressions of the mate's love. In The Common Sense Family Doctor, Kenny Lin, MD wrote about Don Berwick, MD, head of CMS Medicare and Medicaid) who is getting grilled by Congress in hearings. Dr Berwick is quoted in his speech to med students about useless policies that impair patient experiences that med students have to replace or ignore. Dr Synonymous then reviews a new Stroke prevention guideline that recommends use of Emergency Departments in stroke prevention- another sign of the primary care workforce shortage. Then Dr Anonymous blog post of 2/14 notes the 1986 Revolution in the Philippines. Lastly, Dr S comments on his 2/14 post about the Human Centered Health Home: Building Trust by Sharing Patient and Physician Uncertainty.
