Katharine Hsu is on a mission to help children ENJOY reading and writing because these days, being good at something is not enough. If you grow up hating something, you will never use it to your advantage. Enjoyment also happens to be the magical way to improve in literacy and language twice as fast. Growing up, English was her second language, and she hated to read and write. It was hard and felt boring. For the last 11 years, Katharine has studied both traditional and modern literacy practices and worked with hundreds of children from diverse backgrounds. What she's learned is that just about every kid can fall in love with reading and writing if you teach it in a way that matches the child's personality, culture, and learning style.
Katharine now teaches writing classes both online and in person for K-8 as a way to improve reading and self-confidence.

We believe student-facing staff are key to transformative educational experiences. Folks in instructional and coaching roles are often the ones asked to do the herculean job of ensuring every student is set up for success and graduates on time.
And yet, very few tools are purpose-built for their needs. This job is made more challenging as classrooms move online and class sizes grow.
At Ribbon Education, we are building the ‘operating system’ for student support, starting with a set of free tools for teachers (and student success teams) that maximize insights and minimize busy work to help you focus on what you do best - understanding and building relationships with your students.
The future of scaled, online education only succeeds when we help educators and coaches be more successful in supporting students.

Our image of a classroom community in secondary education is rapidly evolving. The experience of remote learning during a pandemic has altered our mental picture of students occupying rows of desks with a teacher nearby, closely monitoring their activities. But even when teachers are able to be in physical proximity to their students, the research is clear that students need to be empowered to take ownership of their learning in order to be fully engaged. The question this book explores is: How can teachers step back, stop micromanaging, and allow students more agency?
In this engaging guide, instructional specialist Miriam Plotinsky breaks hover-free teaching down into four sequential stages: mindset, deeper relationships, planning for engagement, and choice-based instruction. Her book shows how teachers can free themselves from helicopter habits and allow students greater control of their own learning, while still managing and maximizing classroom time effectively.
Miriam Plotinsky is an instructional specialist with Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, and the author of Teach More, Hover Less: How to Stop Micromanaging Your Secondary Classroom. Also a National Board Certified Teacher and certified administrator, she lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.
