THE LAST WORD with Tim The Tool

About 12 years ago, Drew’s old friend from summer camp asked him about the possibility of coming into the studio during a show to watch live radio. The following week, Tim asked if he could come back. The next week, he asked again. Drew decided that if Tim was to keep coming back, he would train him on the soundboard and maybe he could become the show’s engineer. Tim ended up making numerous mistakes every show and thus garnered the nickname “Tim The Tool.” Over the last 12 years though, he has become an integral part of the TDMS as Drew & Tim developed an on-air schtick of “an old married couple who were just sick and tired of each other”. TDMS was never the same again. Neither was Drew! So to honour his friend, Drew will finally give the last word to Tim The Tool!

Paul Henderson will forever be recognized and remembered for his goal with 34 seconds remaining in the 8th game of the 1972 Summit Series, giving Canada the lead and winning them the series. With that, the team became known as “the Team of the Century” and Paul’s goal as “the Goal of the Century.” But, there is more to Paul Henderson than just that one goal. Despite his recent diagnosis with cancer, his positive demeanor and zest for life remain. In his memoir The Goal of My Life, Henderson opens up about his success both on and off the ice. Henderson’s career spanned 19 professional seasons during which he played over 1,000 major league games in the NHL and WHA. He was a two-time NHL all-star, playing in the 1972 and 1973 All-Star Games. Sportswriters and fans have frequently called for Henderson to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on the strength of his performance. Commentator and former coach Don Cherry argued that Henderson’s status as a hero of the “greatest series in hockey history” was enough to qualify him. Henderson has been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame on two occasions. He was first inducted as an individual in 1995, and again ten years later along with his 1972 teammates. He has been honoured by Hockey Canada with the Order of Hockey in Canada as part of its 2013 class. Henderson was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012 in recognition of “his engagement in support of a range of social and charitable causes” along with his achievements on the ice.

Even though Drew was in a vow of silence, he was able to question the monk as to why this book was part of their library, since, in Drew’s mind, THE SHACK is a book that in many ways challenges religion. The young Brother said that it was his favorite book. As a matter of fact, THE SHACK was a favourite amongst all the monks.

Growing up in a strict, fundamentalist church in the southern USA, a young Philip Yancey tended to view God as “a scowling Supercop, searching for anyone who might be having a good time—in order to squash them.” Yancey jokes today about being “in recovery” from a toxic church. “Of course, there were good qualities too. If a neighbor’s house burned down, the congregation would rally around and show charity—if, that is, the house belonged to a white person. I grew up confused by the contradictions. We heard about love and grace, but I didn’t experience much. And we were taught that God answers prayers, miraculously, but my father died of polio just after my first birthday, despite many prayers for his healing.” For Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. So, he devoured books that opened his mind, challenged his upbringing, and went against what he had been taught. A sense of betrayal engulfed him. “I felt I had been lied to. For instance, what I learned from a book like To Kill a Mockingbird or Black Like Me contradicted the racism I encountered in church. I went through a period of reacting against everything I was taught and even discarding my faith. I began my journey back mainly by encountering a world very different than I had been taught, an expansive world of beauty and goodness. Along the way, I realized that God had been misrepresented to me. Cautiously, warily, I returned, circling around the faith to see if it might be true.” Ever since, Yancey has explored the most basic questions and deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, taking millions of readers with him. Early on he crafted best-selling books such as Disappointment with God and Where is God When it Hurts?. However, more recently, he has felt the freedom to explore central issues of the Christian faith, penning award-winning titles such as The Jesus I Never Knew, What’s So Amazing About Grace? and Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? He currently has more than 15 million books in print, published in 50 languages worldwide.

Kathie Lee Gifford is the three-time Emmy award-winning former co-host of the fourth hour of “TODAY,” alongside Hoda Kotb. The Gifford-Kotb hour was hailed as “appointment television” by Entertainment Weekly, and “TODAY’s happy hour” by USA Today.
