With the return of Pinky bearing news of the general location of the Tsigani in the city, the party travels once again into the Bread Wall District. After getting some supplies, Ren hears the clamor of people coming from the BDBB (Black Dragon Bakery and Brewery, one of the first places they visited when the Vigils reached Havnok). Entering in, they party has their first run in with one of these legend keepers, an aging elf with golden eyes and a hijab like Scarf made of many different colors. She introduces herself as Gwendolyn and talks briefly to the Vigils of what she knows about the history of this great city. Much of what they have been able to find out is confirmed by the with the information stored in her Memory Weave. She takes special interest in the condition afflicting Ren's family members and promises to travel to Ba'wouli to learn what she can. The party then leaves and meets up with Brigadier Haws before adventuring into the undercity. As the Vigils trek down hallways turned sewers, they come to a crossroads of paths with the easterly end blocked by rubble and some sort of hovel built there. Barren, Ren, Pinky, and Alia find a rat-like person cowering under a table, and immensely effected by the shadow plague. Just as he is able to shout out a warning, shadows descend upon the party with Opal taking a beating from one. With the use of Adaliade's Moonbeam and Opal's radiant strikes, the battle quickly turns back in the Vigil's favor. With only one way to relieve his ailment, Ren makes the hard choice to put the suffering Wererat out of his misery.

The Morning come of the third day that the Vigil's have been in Havnok. As most of the group leaves Alia and Barren behind for the funeral of Renerin, the town guard that lost his life, they overhear a street crier. The city of castles lesser ward where the poor live are increasingly being burdened by the shadowy plague and new quarantines and curfews being established. They hurry to the Barracks of the Crimson Cloaks Situated on the Bread wall and enter the service. They watch as the body is prepared for cremation, burned, and his sword is passed down to the dead man's son. Moss is able to talk with Brigadier Haws who agrees to help them search the undercity and offer some magical items to boot. Meanwhile, Barren makes a major discovery through his understanding of alchemy about the ooze made of two different sources. The Kruvust pestilence portion seems to be weakened and the shadow that is mixed with it seems to be bolstering it. The party comes back together and set off to find a Tsigani. On their way, they stop to identify the whip Alia has been holding onto for a long time. During Opal's ritual, Barren and Ren spar as a way to pass the time. They find the whip to be known as a "Racha' Ko Pulung" or King's Blood whip, which is powerful yet very dangerous at the same time. Finally pinky returns with news that the Tsigani has been seen recording the stories of the Plague and is in the Bread Wall district.

As Opal slips into a vision from a previous Hero of Lillies, She finds herself in an out of body experience talking to an Opal from the past. She is able to gain info that the Demon from a bygone era was a Kruvust or Demon of Pestilence. After a warming reunion with Adilaide from her 24 hour shopping spree, the team talks over their findings and decides that it might be best to do some hands on research about the shadows that they previously faced. They head out into the night and locate a suitable entrance into the undercity. Not long after posting up to wait, two shadows make their way towards the grate and are stopped by Alia's bonfire. A fight ensues with information being learned with every attack. Opal slays a shadow which turns out to be some sort of tentacled abomination able to control and sheath itself in shadow. She collects the goo left behind after the shadow was slain and sees signs that it's made of two different forces, one of pestilence and the other of shadow. The other shadow just slips out of Moss's clutches much to his chagrin and the Vigil's head back to the outpost to rest before the next day.

With the party splitting to investigate the happenings of Havnok, Pinky and Moss return to the Bread Wall. There they meet a doctor from The Watchers who shared with them some information. Pinky was approached by some angry townspeople about Vigil's taking children and she was able to deceive them into thinking she isn't a Vigil. Moss and Pinky then find a way into the undercity. As they are exploring they come across a Large Spider oozing black shadow from it's mandibled mouth which chases them back to their exit. Pinky goes for an attack at the top of a ladder and the spider is able to get a bite on her knocking her out with one bite. After the sickening thud of her body hitting the ground, moss makes the split second decision to heal Pinky. Pinky opens her eyes but her limbs don't respond as the venom of the spider has paralyzed her. With that realization, moss rips a patch off his cloak, falls beside Pinky, and plants the patch by her. A window forms and they slip out of the spider's clutches. Moss and Pinky ride down a rapid of drainage and exit out of the city from a sewer pipe. Going back to the rest of the group as they have gathered together at the outpost, Alia confronts Ren about his beliefs. After trying to help her see his point of veiw, Ren and Alia join Barren as they ask Opal what is going on. She explains her origins as a descendent of the Hero of Lillies who has been chosen to take up the hero's mantle. This burden along with the fear of not being able to be her own person pushed her to strike out and join the Vigil's. Finally Moss and Pinky return and the group gets ready to rest.

With their run in with the demonic shadows just behind them, the Vigils travel with the surviving guard to his barracks to warn his commanding officer. They then travel back to their own outpost and rest for the evening trying to recover their strength. In the morning, discussion of their next move consumes them as it is apparent that to defeat some type of Demon may be out of their reach. In the midst of their conversation, the Vigil's are interrupted by a visit from Brigadier Haws, a high ranked officer of the Crimson Cloaks. After a terse conversation, it's clear that she herself is worried for her people and came looking for information from the Vigils. During Such discussions, Barren asks how soon they could receive additional backup from more experienced Vigil, and Bral the curator informs him that it will be 5 days till help arrives. Once the members of the group agree that they need to do what they can in the mean time, the party splits up to research on what they might be facing. Opal and Ren head to the Temple of The Huntress and Barren and Alia head to the Arched Library. Both groups glean that what they are fighting is very old and may have strong connections to the Gods of Evil known as the Usurpers, the Reulli people who inhabited the City of Castles prior, and a champion known as the Hero of Lillies. With this information these two group meet back up to share what they learned. Questions where raised as Opal was acting suspicious and Alia realizes that Ren is a worshiper of Yoko, a Usurper God.

After vanquishing the demonic shadow, the party discovers that the Elwind's son's ailment, though helped, was not cured. They decide to look into their other lead of what is going on by following the small boy, Powel, who had been collecting the moldy bread. He leads them to his meeting spot with Klem who they then follow into the Smiter's Quary, a poorer district where the stone is hewn for the City of Castles. They discover that Klem is feeding unsuspecting citizens the bread and spreading the sickness. A chase breaks out and after causing a ruckus in a back alleyway they catch Klem. Using Opal's ability to divinely sense beings of light and dark, Klem turns out to be a Fiend of some sort. They take her and interrogate her gaining only cryptic information about this creature's leader, Mo'onyan, and something that is coming called Voddenfell. After relaying the true song for bread tag, the party finds themselves surrounded by more demonic shadows and a fight breaks out. The party manages to slay the demonic Klem as well as a few shadows but decides to fall back as the shadows kill one of the town guards that was with them as well as almost suck the strength completely out of Ren and Alia. The last thing the party sees behind them is one of the shadows grabbing something out of the ooze that remained of Klem and turning corporeal as a new Klem.

The party of Vigil's find themselves in Havnok, the City of Castles with it's imposing walls and labyrinthine streets. The curator of the Vigil outpost points the group to investigate the Bread Wall, a section of the city known for it's delicious baked goods and being built into the side of a steep cliff. After a few hours of pressing their way through the crowds, they reached the Black Dragon Bakery & Brewery (also known as the BDBB). Due to Ren and Alia's appetite the party enters the BDBB for their famous dragon bread while Pinky spots some children to play with. The Bread is divine and the children teach Pinky bread tag. Barren talks with a woman who's husband is sick and discovers her children are missing as well. In the middle of all these activities, all the bread in the city district turns rancid with crusty black mold. Pinky starts asking questions but the ring leader of the children, Klem, who cannot be found. The party searches high and low in the BDBB and is eventually lead to the Elwind family with a sick teenager. Then Opal and Ren using their abilities to sense evil and poison respectively realize that there is some demonic presence in the boy and Alia and Moss push it out using magic. The boy shakes, foaming complete darkness at the mouth as he vomits a shadow which stands up and makes a run for it. Through a combined effort and especially through the use of Opal's axe, Shadowrend, the Vigil's of Yavna vanquish the creature.

During the escapades of Barren, Adelaide, and Pinky, Opal and Moss have a heart to heart on what it means to be a Paladin for Opal and her personal struggles. Inspired by this conversation, Opal meditates and receives a vision depicting a teen-aged warrior and herself searching for living among the dead. The boy asks her to promise to stop the war if she has the chance and she accepts leaving herself fearing that she is failing her duty as a paladin. Going to those outside of the training grounds; quick thinking with pinky's new ability, a magic scroll, and a good amount of luck keep the group from being detained by the Ostowian Shield Guardians. They make it back to the training ground and Alia is summoned to help them get back in. Though Barren and her are far from seeing eye to eye, she helps them get back in. Three months later, the training is finally complete and each of the Vigils have changed in some way. As they are brought back to the Lighthouse they are all rewarded with their Vigil Symbol to show their status as full Vigils of Yavna. They are introduced to Reginald, their handler, and after a brief description of the Lighthouse interior, he informs them of their first assignment. The are whisked away through the Dioptric Ring and teleported to Havnok, The City of Castles.

With their training fully underway, the new group of Vigil's are given the 'new employee' presentation. The group decides to focus on personal development and accomplishing their goals as a group. Barren the night before decided to clean up and shave, his purple eye are strange for a human. Many of the characters choose to use what little down time they have to research in hope of improving their knowledge. The characters also receive special training to help them with their future adventures. After receiving a letter from Draven, Barren decides to look for a way out of the training area in order to find this person he is supposed to be taking care of. He asks Pinky and Adelaide to join him and together they leave to find the girl. After reaching the Upper Swells, the residental area close to the Lighthouse, the group finds Elise, Barren's teenage sister, and they reconnect. Just as she is going to tell barren something, they are spotted by an Automaton Guardian.

As the new vigils make their way to the training grounds, a pervasive awkwardness fills the cabin of the carriage as Alia's mother had just hung up her sending stone. This is not assisted as Barren pushes the subject and everyone else tries to get as far away from talking about Alia's hardships as possible. The only relief is the jovial carraige driver named Spindly. The party finally reaches the Training area, a hexagonal slanted Colosseum carved from the natural stone of the crater that the Lighthouse resides in. Kaletho and Deniz greet the new Vigils and throw them into their first training as some of the members must rescue others stuck at the top of a pillar.Unbe​knownst to them a shambling mound of vines and plant material had also been summoned to hunt them as they tried to rescue their comrades. After a fight where Barren was eaten, Ren was slammed, and a vine was insanely hard to cut; the group defeated the monster. Adaliade called upon her celestial blood to fly up to the top of the pillar to free Alia. Later that evening Opal revealed to Adilaide that she too has celestial blood as they both have somehow been chosen by the Gods.
