What happens when the identity that carried you through your entire life suddenly stops working?
In her mid-40s, Ann a San Francisco Bay Area tech executive had built a life around competence, independence, structure, and taking care of everyone else. As a little girl, she learned that her purpose was to care for others and to entirely reject care from others.
Over time, that lesson became hyper-independence.
She became the person who could handle anything. A self-described robotic, structured control freak, she knew how to keep moving, keep functioning, and keep everything together. Until a difficult breakup and the devastating experience of making an end-of-life decision for her mother cracked something wide open.
For years, she had been carrying the emotional equivalent of a Mason jar, stuffed tightly with feelings, grief, needs, vulnerability, and experiences she had learned to contain. Therapy had helped her understand herself, but understanding wasn’t enough to change the way she lived inside her body. Her emotional life began to crack open. Ann had to find an answer.
Attending Eleusinia retreat, became the one way the lid began to come off that Mason jar. And what emerged wasn’t just grief or pain. There was immense love. Joy. Tenderness. Playfulness. And the bubbly, childlike parts of herself that had been waiting underneath years of emotional control.
The experience became a life altering invitation to rediscover the humanity of being human, the beautiful, complicated, gooey, emotional messiness of actually living a full life.
Ann discovered that emotions aren’t obstacles we need to overcome before we can move forward.
That they’re part of the way back home to ourselves.
In this episode, we explore what happens when we stop storing our feelings for later, begin peeling back the layers of who society has told us we are, and become quiet enough to hear ourselves again.
