  • Beamer Books Helped Me Understand It Was a Disease, Not My Dad!

Zoe and her mom Heather return today and share more about how the Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program has assisted the whole family in healing from the disease of addiction.
Empowerment means the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life. I hope you hear Zoe's confidence in her education and the permission for her to set boundaries and speak her truth. Listening to this 15-year-old is truly inspiring, and it fills me with hope. I believe this episode demonstrates well the need and benefits of keeping communication open with your children as they change and grow.
Children typically observe things and mentally try to figure them out for themselves.
Education is vital to empowerment and teaches children to separate the disease from the person and not take responsibility for their loved one's addiction.

  • Heather Gifts Her Children An Opportunity To Write A New Story Through Family Recovery.

I am so excited to introduce you to Heather and Zoe. Since I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program in October 2017, I have dreamed about giving voice to a program graduate.
    Today is that day!!
Zoe, her brother, and her parents participated in the program when Zoe was 7 1/2 years old.
Today begins a three-part conversation with Heather and Zoe sharing the multi-generational disease of addiction in their family. I find it fascinating to hear how different the experience and perception of the disease can be for each family member, and all are valid.
Please share this podcast with anyone with children and grandchildren who could benefit. I know there are fears about sharing, exposing, and teaching our children. I believe hearing from Zoe and Heather can help lessen the concern.
Education and validation of what children intuitively experience are empowering for them.

  • William Shares His Story in 'Broken', Which He Published In 2006, But There's More!

Today I am thrilled to introduce you to William Cope Moyers, a man in long-term recovery who wrote his Memoir, 'Broken' in 2006. William was a trailblazer of sorts, willing to write his book and his truth about his journey with his Substance Use Disorder and recovery.
The inclusion of letters from his father, Bill Moyers, introduced a poignant vital perspective - the impact of the family disease of addiction.
As you will hear in this episode, much has happened in William's life and family since 'Broken' was published.
The disease of addiction is complex, baffling, and full of layers of growth and healing if we are willing to buckle up and engage in our recovery.
William is a man who works his recovery, and as he says, he has "been walking that walk imperfectly."
If listening to William raises a desire for more help for you as a family member, please go to my website

  • For Danni Writing Has Been A Profound Experience; She Exposed her Soul.

Not only does Danni expose her soul in her writing, but she also lets others into the journey of being a family member of loved ones with the disease of addiction.

After this disease took her son Travis, Danni sadly had to embark on a grief journey that she generously shares in her book 'Shoot My Ashes From A Cannon.'

Today Danni shares more about her spiritual pilgrimage with her friends Kate and Elda. Danni also reads another letter from the book she wrote to Travis from her closet.

I know death is one of the scariest consequences of the disease of addiction for all of us. I acknowledge it is hard to consider reading about it; however, you will not regret reading Danni Morford's book.

If hearing this series of episodes with Danni has raised a desire to seek help as a family member who loves someone with the disease of addiction, I am here to help.

  • From Her Closet to The Moon Dog Forest. Danni's Unique Journey of Grief.

Yesterday would have been Travis's 40th Birthday. My heart has been with Danni and her family, thinking of the many emotions they might be experiencing. I am sending them all hugs.

In today's episode, Danni shares more of her grief journey. A journey it has been in all senses of the word. The definition of journey is:

an act or instance of traveling from one place to another.

Danni's grief journey includes the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of the journey, and her book exquisitely shared details of each of them.

Today Danni reads a part of her book for us all, and I am in awe of Danni's ability to be vulnerably open and generous to let us all into her deeply personal journey through family addiction and loss.

  • How Danni's Family Christmas Letters Educated Others and Freed Them From Shame.

Who hasn't wanted to write one of those Christmas letters with unfiltered truth?
Well, today's guest did precisely that. Danni courageously wrote her unbridled truth in her annual Christmas letters.  You see, Danni and Pete were parenting three sons, all with the disease of addiction.
    As Danni says:
"By writing these letters, I could spill my guts and figure out what was going on with me emotionally, so I am grateful my family gave the thumbs-up to send them. This is the story of my family and the power of letters."
Over the next few episodes, Danni will share her story filled with love, humor, and painful truths.

  • Life Is But A Stopping Place.

We all know the saying life is short; it really is!

Today I honor my friend and first podcast guest, Janet.

Janet was very anxious about being a guest on the podcast, and in true Janet's style, she was so humble, authentic, and full of grace and hope. At the end of the recording, she said, "that was kind of fun"!!

Whenever I spoke with Janet and shared that someone had mentioned how much her episode meant to them, she seemed genuinely surprised.

I am so grateful that Janet's story will be out there forever in the podcast archives for anyone to find.

Please revisit her episode or treat yourself and find it for the first time in honor of Janet.
