One of the challenges of finance is to make it relevant to students and business employees. It has to be applied in the workplace so that strategic decisions can be made in the company's best interests. Finance goes beyond the classroom.

Borja Larrain who sits on the strategic boards of both Larrain Vial and Watts and also teaches corporate finance at The Catholic University is perfectly positioned to take finance beyond the blackboard.

In this weeks episode of The Business Breakfast I have the privilege of speaking to female CEO, serial entrepreneur and investor, Carolina Navarrete who heads up digital marketing agency, Moovshake.

Carolina has had quite a journey in order to get to where she is now. Through leaving university and changing careers to working for some of the biggest brands in the globe across retail, telecommunications and ecommerce, she has enjoyed widespread success as an entrepreneur and investor.

In today's episode we discuss Carolina's business beginnings, with Abasmedia, her work with Moovshake and how digital marketing has changed in the last 20 years. In this week's episode of the Business Breakfast, I talk to Julio Alonso, Director General of Wines of Chile in the US.

The problem that Chile has is not so much generating awareness of its incredible wines, but that of genarating awareness of its incredible country, the diversity of its climates and the incredible landmarks and places that occupy the vast country. From Patagonia in the south to thr Atacama in the north, Chile is still a rather undiscovered land. This is where the work of Julio comes in.

His remit as Director General of Wines of Chile is to increase awareness of Chile as a destination, so that wine lovers and prospective investers get to experience it as a country full of opportunity. In this episode we talk about Julio's work in China, the US and India and the challenges he faces and faced in China, where the work of promoting chilean wine to a nation of 1.3 billion is  not to be underestimated.

In Chile, wine plays a very important role and is in fact the 7th largest exporter of wine in the US selling on average around 9 million litres every year. 

Torreon de Paredes, led by Executive Director, Javier Paredes, is an exclusive, family-run Chilean winery situated in Rengo, in the Andes foothills, around 115 kilometeres south of Santiago. Torreon sells to a predominantly UK and European market with varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Merlot taking centre stage.

When Covid 19 wreaked havoc across  the globe, Torreon's sales were hit hard,  to such a degree that not one bottle of wine was exported to the UK for a whole year. But rather than panic, Torreon took advantage of the situation  and planned for the future.

Ivan Rozas, owner and co-founder of Hi-Post or The Last Mile is passionate about cars, logistics and distribution. So much so that upon leaving university he got a job working for Inchacape, the UK-based, global car distribution company which is now making its presence known within Latin America with the recent acquisitions of Derco and Ditec. It was at Inchcape that he met his now business partner, saw a gap in the market to improve customer parcel delivery service and founded his startup, Hi-Post or The Last Mile, a company that takes charge of customer parcel delivery for the last mile of its journey.

In this weeks  episode of The Business Breakfast, I talk to Ivan about the development of his company, funding techniques, sustainability and his vision for the future. I would also like to congratulate Ivan on his ability to communicate in English and for showing the courage and confidence to participate in this interview. It's not often that I get the opportunity to speak to an Olympic Athlete - not only that, but also the youngest ever chilean javelin thrower to compete at an Olympics and to hold the national record, a record that still stands today.

Ignacio Guerra competed at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, met Usain Bolt, earned an MBA scholarship for Kentucky State University, and together with his partner has now founded his own startup, Latam Broker, a wine distribution business started on the strength of his experience working with renound wineries across the region.

In this episide of The Business Breakfast we discuss Ignacio's time as an Olympic Athlete, the difficulties he faced and how and when he made the transition from Olympian to entrepreneur. What does it take to finance and launch a new school? What are some of the challenges an entrepreneur faces with such a large undertaking? Even without the pressure of ensuring children attend the school and parents wanting to send their kids there, there are a lot of things that an educational visionary has to think about. Things such as financing the construction, marketing the school, building it in time and on budget and finding a site to build it.

Miguel O'Farrell, lawyer of the largest law firm in Argentina and serial entrepreneur saw an opportunity to build a school, Cruz del Sur, in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires which mixed children from both a nearby shanty town with kids from more an affluent background in 2011. The results were incredible and this year, Cruz Del Sur will see its first generation of students graduate with 96% of them going on to study at university.
