  • Canadian Postal Workers Call for Green - Expanded - Services

Conor talks with Brahm Enslin, the president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) Saskatoon Local. Brahm was the regional organizer for the CUPW’s Delivering Community Power campaign - which was organized by workers pushing for a greener postal service.

We also discuss how postal workers are encountering more and more climate impacts while out doing their jobs and the crucial roles they play in communities that are not often appreciated (like checking in on the most vulnerable).

In the Q&A we talk about why the environmental and workers' movements can learn from each other and should coordinate more together, plus we look at how the media handled the 'charitable angle' of the recent Canada Post strike.

Sierra Club Canada stands in solidarity with postal workers and the CUPW.

  • Part 2: Q&A on Resisting the U.S. Annexation of Canada: Through Renewable Energy Democracy & Community

Listen to PART ONE here FIRST if you haven't already: https://www.sierraclub.ca/united-states-annexation-canada/

That those most opposed to climate action are also those who want Canada to surrender into becoming the 51st U.S. State is unsurprising. U.S. conquest has usually happened as a result of the influence of oil and gas corporations, the same corporations that have thrown their support behind Trump. The interests of Canadian national sovereignty and those of oil and gas corporations are increasingly going in separate ways.

In Part One we discussed what you can do to help stand up against annexation and why corporate-sponsored climate denial has led us to this point. We also discussed why we need an even more rapid shift to a renewable economy, now more than ever, to remain independent of foreign powers like the United States.

Part Two is a Q&A on questions we have received from you since,
like what would the many forms of annexation look like, how has the response from media been, how would annexation impact our influence on the U.S.'s politics, and more on why we should take the threat of annexation seriously.

  • The 2024 Year Impact & Year Ahead for Sierra Club Canada

Our previous holiday episode on how to talk with others on climate change is available here: https://www.sierraclub.ca/climate-change-family-talk/

Organizing exhibitions with wildfire and flood survivors, progressing dialogues for energy democracy and the Rights of Nature, concrete victories for the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale and for Québec green spaces vital to biodiversity, as well as progress on national and local climate policy - Sierra Club Canada’s work in 2024 was connected to all of this. Despite all the political theatre, most Canadians continue to want concrete action aimed at lowering corporate oil and gas pollution and at addressing climate change.

We discuss these wins and what it will take to win in the future.

We also discuss issues like the cost of living and life struggles and why systemic solutions that go after big polluters are more important than ever. Finally we look to 2025, and our plans to keep working on the above, to keep doing outdoor education, film screenings we’re organizing on Line 5 early in the new year, and building out our resources for the whole environmental movement.

  • The Yukon, Food Security, & the South Beringia Priority Place

We discuss food security lessons from personal experiences in the Yukon and, on an unrelated note, share the audio version of our past webinar with the Yukon Conservation Society on their Yukon South Beringia Priority Place initiative. The Priority Place spans 89,000 square kilometers between the Ogilvie Mountains to the north and Dezadeash Lake and Carcross to the south. Because it was never (or only occasionally) glaciated during the ice ages, it is home to some of the oldest landscapes in Canada and contains a variety of unique and endemic species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

For anyone concerned about how climate change will impact our ability to feed ourselves we share some advice on how to make our food systems more resilient in the second half of today's episode. Please note that the views in the second half of the podcast are on behalf of ourselves and not our guests.

  • Thank Oil & Gas CEOs for Tariffs, We Need an Emissions Cap Now

Thanks to the oil and gas CEOs behind the coming U.S. Administration tariffs might be coming soon to a Canadian economic sector near you, but likely oil and gas itself will be exempt from tariffs (no surprise there). Meanwhile an emissions cap on oil and gas corporations could save thousands of Canadian lives through air pollution reductions alone and the cap will NOT hurt Canada's oil and gas competitiveness.

We get into that and ask why climate policy has become Canadian media's favourite scapegoat for economic fears.

Get facts on the emissions cap here: https://www.sierraclub.ca/action-item/canada-emissions-cap-facts/

Did you know that of every additional dollar of inflation over two years in Canada, 25 cents of that has gone to oil and gas and mining extraction profits? Or that Oil and gas corporations, while only 5% of Canada’s economy, are Canada’s most polluting sector causing around 30% of national emissions. Find out more.

Jessica speaks with post activist and paradigm shifting thought leader Bayo Akomolafe, who is a poet, philosopher, and the Executive Director of the Emergence Network. They explore what post activism has to offer today’s movements for a more just and green world.

In the Q&A we tackle ideas on how to deal with the rise of artificial intelligence ( AI ) in a productive way, the atom-bomb-development-analogy, limiting damage, and the importance of the human element in the history of technological development.

  • Wildfire & Flood Survivors Call for Emissions Cap

Read emissions cap facts here: https://www.sierraclub.ca/action-item/canada-emissions-cap-facts/

We interview survivors of wildfires and floods in Canada who lost businesses, communities, or had property damaged. They are calling for the Canadian Government to enact an emissions cap on oil and gas corporations. That emissions cap is now out in draft form as of yesterday. We also get into the new policy, how it looks, how it can be strengthened, why it needs to be implemented rapidly.

The emissions cap will NOT harm our economy, nor jobs, nor grocery prices and oil and gas lobbyists do not care about you - that much is clear.

We also recently held exhibits of artefacts from climate disasters which featured testimonies from survivors calling for an emissions cap entitled Protect What We Love in both Ottawa and NYC: https://www.protectwhatwelove.ca/

Climate survivors talk about their experiences and meeting others at the exhibit who have been impacted by climate change.
