How to Deal with a Difficult Child

You can actually control your child's response not by controlling them, but by how you control yourself. The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own. Instead of yelling, start asking questions and listen. This requires a big mindset shift. When you use humility instead of manipulation, your child will begin to listen to you.

How to Control Your Emotions

First, realize that it just doesn't work. You can get compliance from a child in that moment. But you're actually not building that relationship. You're not changing the heart. Be honest with yourself to recognize that you're just being a baby because you didn’t get your way. When you yell at your child and they're upset because they didn't get their way, guess where they’re learning that from? You, obviously.

Second, body posture is important. Sit down instead of standing up, and you’ll notice how that simple dynamic could change your tone. You don't see two people arguing while sitting and reclining in a chair.

Third, do the opposite of what you normally do. Identify your triggers and notice how your tone starts to change and how your child reacts. Once you see this pattern, do the opposite of what you usually do. Focus on leading them rather than pushing them. For instance, instead of barking in their room, come in and sit on their bedside for 15 seconds, and mention something they're interested in. By taking interest rather than barking out your anxiety, you’re giving them what they actually need, which is your time. You’re paying attention to them, and so, you’ve turned that anxiety into love.

James Webb, author of ​​Redneck Resilience: A Countryboy’s Journey to Prosperity, talks about the steps he took to build a massive sales company. Everybody knows the adage about failure that you don't learn from your successes, but you learn from your failures. Yet a true entrepreneur understands that if you haven't failed at least three times, you're not trying hard enough. Because as you fail again and again, resilience kicks in. As you get back up, you find a different path, and go down that path. You get back up again, find another path, and learn why you failed. And then pick another path until you eventually get it right.

The Best Lesson in Business

Don’t use your line of credit as a term loan but use it for short-term cash flow issues. A line of credit is meant to be used for short-term cash flow issues, not a fundamental “grow your business” thing.

This was the biggest lesson Michael learned in his previous business during the dot-com era because it was growing so fast. Having learned such an important lesson, he started TLC Tech with the goal to achieve balance and make sure he was not going to do debt. Although they have a line of credit since a good business needs that, they rarely use it. It's meant as a very short-term gap to deal with a very specific problem, not the fundamental "I need to grow the business."

Having Accountability with Your Goals

When Michael started, created an accountability sheet with all of his goals – broken down into 10-year, three-year, one-year, 90-day, monthly, and then weekly goals. And it wasn’t until he was reviewing his goals every single day when things took off for him.

His goal achievement percentages went up drastically, while ironically only having to work fewer hours because he had better balance in all areas of his life.
