Doctor Who continues to light up our television screens after sixty-two years. In all those years there have been periodic discussions within fandom over whether a particular story or time period within the series is sexist or even if Doctor Who as a whole has sexist undertones. In recent years, the charge has come that Doctor Who’s classic decades are much more sexist than its newer iteration. In this episode we take a look at Doctor Who from the beginning in 1963 to now. We discuss various aspects of the series and whether we consider those to be sexist. We also compare the classic series to the new series and debate how the series stacks up on this topic now versus then.
Due to time constraints there is no five-minute controversy this week.
This week Miranda, Annie, and Felicity join the cast.

Jim discusses an interpretation of a classic monster movie that made quite an impact on him when it was released in 1985 – “The Bride,” starring Sting, Jennifer Beals, Clancy Brown, David Rappaport, Geraldine Page, Anthony Higgins, Alexei Sayle, Cary Elwes and directed by Franc Roddam. This retelling of the “Frankenstein” saga was not initially well-received but, has developed a large cult following the last 40 years. This Week on Earth Station DCU! Drew Leiter and Cletus Jacobs review comics and stupid happens. In Action Comics #1082–1084, Superman investigates why reformed villains like Major Disaster are relapsing into crime, uncovers a conspiracy manipulating them alongside Batman, and ultimately learns that alien Foreverers have been exploiting their DNA to prolong their own lives. In Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #36–37, Batman, Superman, Robin, Aquaman, and Swamp Thing battle the Floronic Man’s eco-terror plot beneath the seas, ultimately uniting Atlantis and thwarting his bid for oceanic dominion. In Black Lightning #4–5, Jefferson Pierce clashes with Superman while struggling to guide his daughters, then reunites with his family to battle Volcana and the Masters of Disaster in Southside Metropolis, ultimately setting up his recruitment into the Power Company. All this plus, DC News, Shout Outs, and much, much more!

If the VH-1 show “Totally Obsessed” were still making new episodes, then Micah Hirsh would have been on it as the “The Emperor’s New Groove” guy! He breaks down the whole franchise on “The Emperor’s New Podcast”, which I have appeared on a couple of times. Micah came to L.A. for a special 25th anniversary screening of “Groove” at Disney’s historic El Capitan theater on Hollywood Boulevard featuring a panel interview of special guests. So I met up with him there (along with his friend Noah Snodgrass, aka Otterly Noah on YouTube), and after the show we went to Canter’s Delicatessen on Fairfax to record this episode while having some good pastrami sandwiches! To my knowledge, Patrick Warburton was not in the kitchen making the sandwiches, nor spinach puffs.

We packed our bags, grabbed our passports, and left snowy Sault Ste. Marie for a week of sun, sea, and Disney magic. Air Canada nudged us south with a layover in Toronto. From there, we dropped into Florida and spent two nights at the Country Inn & Suites in Port Canaveral. We needed that buffer before cruise chaos began.
On Sunday, November 16, we boarded the Disney Fantasy and made it our floating home until Friday the 21st. Every day, we recorded a short recap. We wanted fresh details before the ocean breeze stole them.
We met great people. The Disney staff impressed us at every turn. Most of the food hit the spot. The crowds? Less magical. Many kids screamed. Many adults stopped directly in front of us. We powered through with coffee and determination.
The ship’s theatre played TRON: Ares, so of course we went. We also visited both private islands—Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay. Leah snorkeled at Castaway Cay, which felt like swimming in warm, clear bliss.
One major highlight? The Rainforest Room spa. It was blissfully 18+. Heated loungers, quiet vibes, and zero children. We loved every second.
We tried some cooking shows. We failed spectacularly at trivia. We laughed about it more than we should have.
It was a full, fun trip. A little chaotic. A lot memorable. And perfect for our 40th episode.

Remember the days when you would sit around with your friends and play records for each other? Well, that’s what we do on this week’s Modern Musicology! To celebrate Anthony’s 38th birthday, he shares with us 20 songs that he loves and gets our reaction to them. Anthony’s tastes range from pop to metal, from prog to rap, with some kitsch and silliness along the way. We’ll hear songs by bands that you’d expect from Anthony, like Marillion, Porcupine Tree, and Marina, but there’s also some unexpected things like White Lies, The Church of the Cosmic Skull, Sopor Aeternus, and even Public Enemy, plus a lot more. We definitely had a great time doing our deep dive into Anthony’s collection!
To listen in full to the songs that Anthony has selected for us, you can follow along on this Spotify playlist. If you like any of these songs and want to hear more, there’s a second playlist with some additional recommendations.

This week, we’re on a second contact mission, revisiting Star Trek: Enterprise Season 2, Episode 17 “Canamar.” now that Jamie and Maria have watched it and have a lot of thoughts about this Star Trek version of ConAir (ConAirMar?). Also, in everyone’s favorite segment Mammary Alpha, we learn about the absolutely bananas Memory Alpha page for “balls” (no, not THOSE balls).
A word of warning: If you haven’t listened to the episode before this one, “Smug Criminals!,” go listen to that first because this is a follow up to last week.
Produced by K.O. Myers at Particulate Media. If you enjoy the show, follow us on Facebook or on BlueSky or send us an email to [email protected]. We cannot tell you how much we would love to hear from you!
