Mac and Me movie review time!
Mac and Me. Cult classic, infomercial, E.T. ripoff or something more? Considered one of the worst films ever made, Mac and Me has entered the realm of cult classic. But, what is a cult classic?
A cult classic is a film, or other work, that has gained a dedicated, passionate fanbase. They often develop an elaborate subculture around it. These films are typically unconventional. They may not have been initially successful or well-received by mainstream audiences. They often feature elements that resonate with a specific, niche group, leading to repeated viewings, dialogue quoting, and audience participation.
Key Characteristics of Cult Classics:
Dedicated Fanbase: Cult classics are defined by a fervent and devoted following. They often form a subculture with rituals like quoting dialogue, audience participation (like interactive screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show), and elaborate cosplay.
Unconventional Nature: These films often deviate from mainstream norms, sometimes being transgressive, experimental, or drawing from genres like horror, sci-fi, or exploitation.
Initial Lack of Success: Many cult classics were not commercially successful upon their initial release. Accordingly, they gained popularity later through word-of-mouth and dedicated fan engagement.
Subjectivity of Taste: The appeal of a cult classic is often subjective, with some films celebrated for qualities that might be considered “good” or “bad” by different viewers.
Blurring Lines: The term “cult classic” is increasingly used for mainstream films that have developed unconventional elements and devoted fan bases.
Mac and Me movie review is just one of our topics this week. We dive into our Etsy shops. Due to our office needing organizing, we spent several hours fixing it up. We listed many new items. We built a beehive. After visiting the United States on Canada Day, we learned a lesson about tariffs. Leah got new Lego. Furthermore, Shawn finally picked up a sought after G.I.Joe action figure. Our friend Tracy came near town and we drove an hour to visit her. Overall, it was a busy 2 weeks!

Shane Morton and Madeline Brumby join Jim for a rousing discussion of a Ray Harryhausen 1977 Classic – “Sinbad & The Eye Of The Tiger,” starring Patrick Wayne, Jane Seymour, Taryn Power, Patrick Troughton, Damien Thomas, Bruce Barnabe, Margaret Whiting, and Peter Mayhew. This tale has Sinbad (Wayne) helping Dione save her brother (Thomas) after he was cursed by an evil witch (Whiting). The effects are some of Harryhausen’s finest in this incredible film. Superman & Lois was the final DC series produced by the CW. Originally meant to be part of the Arrowverse, the series blazed its own path once it was determined that crossovers wouldn’t be possible with Covid production restrictions. In this episode we talk about the fourth and final season of the series. We discuss the comic origins of the series. We talk about the use of Lex Luthor and Doomsday and how they added to the overall series. We also get into the various production restrictions for this scaled back season and how we felt that effected the story and our enjoyment. We also give our opinions on the ending of the series and how we felt about the various resolutions.
This week, instead of a five-minute controversy we discuss our thoughts on the Superman (2025) trailer.
This week Beth, Ryan, and Cammie join the cast.

Flopcast episode 687! 1987 was a transitional year in comic books. DC successfully relaunched Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Justice League in their new post-Crisis universe. Marvel started a new universe too, which they called, uh, “New Universe.” Also at Marvel, Spider-Man got married, an event so big that an actual wedding ceremony was held at a baseball stadium. Meanwhile, Alan Moore wrapped up his brilliant run on Swamp Thing, American Splendor’s Harvey Pekar appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Max Headroom made the cover of Mad Magazine… and Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham met the nefarious Dr. Chickenstein. And hey, our pal Kevin Cafferty (from Gleaming the Tube and The Best Stuff in the World) is here to help us figure it all out! Because it’s been 38 years, and comic book nerds like us are still waiting for the next issue of Sonic Disruptors.

No Original Members?
In nearly every case when you see a classic band in concert now, it’s not the original line-up. Does that dampen your experience? Many legacy bands currently on the road are down to only one original member–and a few have none. Is it still the band if no one who started that band or wrote the iconic music is involved? Is there a key member whose absence has too great an impact? Rob and Alan discuss those questions and more in this week’s episode! We cite some big-name examples, like Rush, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Kansas, Asia (who are back in the news with a new line-up and record label), The Beach Boys, and more.
First, though, we take a few moments to pay tribute to Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, and Douglas McCarthy (of Nitzer Ebb). And at the end, we talk about some of our favorite new releases in our Picks of the Week!

This week we will be joined by our good buddy Nick Wright to talk about civilian life and jobs in the Federation. Sounds pretty mundane, but there’s actually some very interesting angles to explore here. We’ll be talking about what life is like within the Federation as well as some jobs held by civilians on Starbases and even Starships. And we’ll speculate wildly about what we can possibly expect from the sitcom that Tawny Newsome is developing which looks more at the civilian side of Federation life!

We’re watching Star Trek: Enterprise Season 2, Episode 8 “The Communicator,” but only Jamie has actually watched the episode. Malcolm accidently leaves his communicator on a pre-contact planet and attempts to recover it go sideways when Archer, for the first time ever, decides to take advice from T’Pol, which he then misapplies to disastrous consequences for everyone living on that planet. Sure he may have started a world war, but the important thing is that he learned an important lesson about… something.
