The European Commission's High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLEG) was established in 2018 as part of the European Union's strategy to foster the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in a way that is human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy. The group comprised experts from academia, industry, and civil society.

      • In June 2019, the group issued recommendations for the development of AI in Europe, focusing on:

      • Assessment List for Trustworthy AI (ALTAI):

        • The ALTAI tool was developed to help companies and organizations assess and ensure that their AI systems meet the requirements for Trustworthy AI. It provides a structured approach for self-assessment, focusing on practical implementation.
          • Influence on EU Policy: The AI HLEG's work laid the groundwork for the EU's broader AI strategy, including the development of the European AI Act, which aims to create a legal framework for AI that balances innovation with the protection of fundamental rights.
          • Engagement with Stakeholders: Through the European AI Alliance, the group engaged over 4,000 stakeholders in discussions on AI's ethical, legal, and social implications.

            • The AI HLEG concluded its mandate in July 2020. Its work continues to influence EU policies on AI, ensuring that AI development and deployment in Europe align with core values and fundamental rights.
