August 1, 2020 is the day that I had to learn how to start telling the world that my dad died. It's still surreal to say at times that he died, even though it has so deeply and irrevocably altered my life and the lives of so many that I love. I invited my mom to have a conversation around what the last year has looked like for her and for us as a family. Grief is a personal journey for each of us and I hope that if you're walking through loss yourself that you will be patient with yourself as you learn how to navigate your way forward.
I plan to record more episodes on the show around my journey with grief, but if you're curious and you'd like to hear more now, you can hear me interviewed by Emily Williams on her podcast, The I Heart My Life Show.
"I had my own notions of grief.
I thought it was a sad time
that followed the death
of someone you love
and you had to push through it
to get to the other side.
But I'm learning
there is no other side,
there is no pushing through,
but rather, there is
absorption,
acceptance.
Grief is not something you
complete,
but rather you endure.
Grief is not a task to finish and move on,
but an element of yourself,
an alteration of your being,
anew way of seeing,
a new definition of self."
