Jan's message is to encourage leaders to understand and embrace the powerful benefits of experiencing joy. It may seem easy to do, but I don't believe it is. Many Executives I work with are adrenaline junkies and want to push hard at life without ever really stopping. This becomes a deeply ingrained habit often sacrificing joy in the process. It can cause stress for some people, because they don’t take much down time or stop working. Jan’s message is about building joy in to your life so that it becomes a priority rather than a secondary benefit from achieving something.

Welcome to episode 45 of The Executive Edge. This week's guest is Laura Miller who runs Tempdev. Tempdev help customers in the US healthcare sector maximize the power of Health Information Technology through efficient workflows, innovative solutions, and dynamic collaborations.

Laura became a computer engineer and worked with someone there she felt helped shape her career. Having a mentor like that gave her direction, guidance, and advice. Then, when she could, she started her own business. Her parents were in Healthcare and although that hadn’t occurred to Laura initially, she started designing tech solutions to healthcare issues. Problems such as recording patients’ details, ensuring people paid up, and using templates to store information, were issues they struggled with.

Christian ‘Boo’ Boucousis trained in the RAF and became a fighter pilot for a number of years. After being diagnosed with an auto-immune condition, he changed tracks and left his life as a pilot. He decided to set up a business in Kabul which became very successful, and he eventually went on to sell it, subsequently starting a variety of business ventures.

This week's guest is Karen Chaston. Karen has had an interesting life, spending time becoming a trained Accountant and senior CFO in a large corporate in Australia. Her life took a different turn though when she lost her son ten years ago. His unexpected death at 27 triggered a change but one she didn’t accept and act on until 15 months later. Her experience of similar and rapid change in her business, had the effect of pulling her up. This helped her realise how much she hadn’t dealt with.

His approach is to help people recognise the value of being able to ‘read’ other people. This includes their facial expressions, ingrained habits of behaviour, and how their body language indicates their mood. He feels this has value both in understanding what people need, instructing them when asking for work to be completed, and in sales.
