The Fantasticast

Kitchen In The Kitchen

Hello, and welcome to episode 282 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're returning to Hell's Kitchen to transition from one set of guest stars to the next. We bid farewell to Daredevil and Yellowjacket, and welcome... Luke Charles? After a bit of research, we find out that he's actually T'Challa, the Black Panther, in his day job as a teacher. Remember that? We don't...

Tom DeFalco picks up his first Marvel credit, joining Roger Slifer, Ron Wilson, Pablo Marcos, Phil Rachelson, Irving Watanabe, and Jim Shooter on Marvel Two-in-One #40. Featuring zuvembies, glue, cellists, undercooked pizza, ethics, the first appearance of Carnegie Hall, and a big bag o' home-grown. You know what we mean.

Musical Memories

Hello, and welcome to episode 281 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're off to Hollywood as Namor and Sue not-quite-resume their flirtation as the Savage Sub-Mariner tries to escape the power and responsibility of running Atlantis by running a movie studio. And fighting an elite team of Retrievers sent by his abandoned people. Quite how this counts as the 'quiet' life is beyond us...

Keith Pollard, Pablo Marcos, Phil Rachelson, and Denise Wohl welcome Marv Wolfman to Fantastic Four #195, a tale of revelatory flashbacks, giant fishtanks, a cape that flows majestically from underneath his buttocks, and the very unlikely origins of the 1994 Fantastic Four movie.

Forgetful Hypno-Specs

Hello, and welcome to episode 280 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're heading to the Mad Thinker's sewer hideout to discover why this nefarious villain wants to take over The Vision and enslave mankind. Or something. Only Daredevil, The Thing, Yellowjacket, and Eugene Everett can stop him. Which is good, because even Paste Pot Pete would make a better mankind enslavement overlord...

Roger Slifer, Ron Wilson, Pablo Marcos, George Roussos, Peter Iro, and Archie Goodwin present Marvel Two-in-One #39. Featuring Daredevil's tighty-whiteys, Yellowjacket's thighs, the Avengers Coffin, a fake psychic, a not-that-fake psychic, a bunch of robot clones, a pair of completely blank metal spectacles, and the wrong Omnibus.

Gassy Head

Hello, and welcome to episode 279 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we return to the scene of the crime (crash), as Fantastic Four #194 sees Alicia, the US Army, and a right dick of a fireman on the trail fo Ben Grimm, who has gone missing in the aftermath of a solar shuttle crash. Will he get caught up in Diablo and Darkoth's plot against Doctor Doom? Let's hope so...

Len Wein, Keith Pollard, Bill Mantlo, Dave Hunt, George Roussos, Annette Kawecki, and Marv Wolfman present Fantastic Four #194 - Vengeance Is Mine. It's a tale of unlikely geographic coincidences, intense melodrama, an unlikely way of pronouncing the word 'EXPLODE', and previous little of any members of the team who aren't primarily comprised of rocks...

How Do I Chicken?

Hello, and welcome to episode 278 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're diving into the pages of Marvel Two-in-One #38, which purports to feature The Thing, but spends a lot of time with Daredevil as he digs into the events that conspired to confine Ben Grimm to jail. Well, until he decides to break out and fall through a surprisingly-fluid hole in the sewers, that is...

Joining us for this episode is Stacey's Pop Culture Parlour host Stacey Taylor, warming up for her upcoming 24 hour live broadcast to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. And now, I'm just going to list the notes I made during the edit.

Shaving Namor

Hello, and welcome to episode 277 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, the focus swings onto Benjamin J. Grimm, fresh from his court case, and his new job as a solar-powered shuttle pilot for NASA. Hopefully a former colleague, brainwashed, mutated into a giant purple cyber-demon, and controlled by a 9th century time-displaced alchemist, won't show up and smash the place up. Oh... whoops!

Len Wein, a debuting Keith Pollard, Bill Mantlo, and Joe Sinnott present the much-requested return of Darkoth in Fantastic Four #193. Along the way, we discuss the veracity of an acting career, admire a purple suit, snigger at the title of an advert, moan about cover credits, and admire a shuttle. It's all in an hour's work for The Fantasticast.

The Shining Is A Ghost Story

Hello, and welcome to episode 276 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

We're entering a new era of Marvel Two-in-One with issue 37, as the book catches up with current Fantastic Four continuity to deliver a detailed look at the humdrum life of Benjamin J. Grimm when shorn of the Fantastic Four. Well, it's a humdrum as it can be when he's accidentally smashing up New York, getting thrown in jail by a bunch of reluctant cops, and being defended by none other than Daredevil's alter-ego: Matt Murdock, Attorney-At-Law!

As you might have intuited, we didn't want to waste this opportunity to invite Daredevil blogger Christine Hanefalk back to the Fantasticast, and to our great delight, she couldn't come up with an excuse to not be here. She joins us to look at the mechanics of balancing a lit cigar, an extendable chin, and an in-depth look at just what kind of trial Ben is actually involved in. Spoilers: it's inconclusive!

Christine's Daredevil blog can be found at http://www.theothermurdockpapers.com/, and on facebook. Follow Christine on twitter where she is @Chris_TOMP, and pre-order your copy of Daredevil Psychology: The Devil You Know.

They're Back!

Hello, and welcome to episode 275 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It's hard to focus on the comic when news hit during the final edit that, in the hands of Dan Slott and Sara Pichelli, the Fantastic Four will return later in 2018. If you listen closely, you can hear Steve's reaction to the news breaking. And then, because we have a job to do, it's back to the Fantastic Four #192.

And it's a sad moment for the Fantastic Four, as George Perez takes his leave of the title and Len Wein starts his transition from the book. But it's not all sadness - Wyatt Wingfoot's back, Johnny's taking part in a confusing drag race, and Rebecca Rainbow is here. There's also some good old Liverpudlian stereotypes, a rare appearance of Woke Johnny, and the startling fate of Glendale.

Gratuitous Heart

Hello, and welcome to episode 274 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're heading back to the sort-of-but-not-quite prehistoric era to see just how The Thing, Skull The Slayer, and a supporting cast without book manage to escape back to their own time, and what might happen if a megalomaniacal priest and a group of oversized pteradons should happen to follow them home.

Marv Wolfman, Ernie Chan, Michelle Wolfman, and Joe Rosen present Marvel Two-in-One #36 which, eventually, guest-stars Mr Fantastic himself, stretching his way in and out of current continuity. We've also got some incredibly prescient Cub Scout campfire songs, and some time-travel sci-fi Borg-y-bollocks.

Self-Folding Sheets

Hello, and welcome to episode 273 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we push past the reprints and the redrawings to cover the final farewells of the Fantastic Four. Reed's decision is final, and a maudlin issue sees the team pack up the Baxter Building, assault some reporters, repel an over-zealous landlord, and receive a suspiciously-convenient telegram from a semi-retired postman.

Len Wein, George Perez, and Joe Sinnott present Fantastic Four #191 - Four No More, in which an ersatz SHIELD agent triggers a temporary reunion of the World's Greatest... uh... Team? Along the way, we discover the world's first Arcade cosplayer, debate the merits of using Whatsapp to co-ordinate a dramatic entrance, and wonder just what happened to Mark Lamarr?
