It's time to warm up those vocals, find you some mistletoe and... get ready to battle zombies? That's right, we launch our final phase of our recurring series #inthemourning about learning how to lose with an examination of 2017's unique zombie Christmas musical, ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE.
After a detour through Jarden, Texas again for the first two episodes of Season 3 of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS, we dive into the charming, peppy, extremely clever and very fun adventure that is truly one of a kind. What we find there, amidst the lovable misfits singing their hearts out about breaking away is a film that has some surprising and inspiring things to say about the choice we have in how we face the end of the world.
It's a fun and heartfelt conversation this week and we hope you enjoy it.

We take to the skies this week with a countdown of your top ten horror films of 2012 (for #20/20/2020) and an extended discussion about Josh Trank's unconventional, found-footage, super-being film CHRONICLE.
The conversation quickly yields itself to a heartfelt and vulnerable discussion about the relationship we have with our own power and the responsibility we carry with how we display and wield that power towards others.
We hope you enjoy it.

We take another brief intermission from our series #inthemourning to tag back in on 20/20/2020, where we count down your favorite horror films from each year in the 2000s. This episode, we focus on 2011, counting down YOUR top ten favorite horror films from the year, and featuring an extended conversation on the Adam Wingard thriller, YOU'RE NEXT. While it is a fun and inventive subversion of the home invasion subgenre, YOU'RE NEXT presents a really good time and even plants a few seed about the broader considerations of the ways pragmatism, when chosen over relationships, can have devastating consequences.
We have a lot of fun with this one -- particularly considering the brief chat we have about the Disney + series MUPPETS NOW -- and we hope you enjoy it!

It has come to this: the resolution of the mystery of the missing girls, the fulfillment of the plans of Meg, the fallout from Kevin's sleepwalking and his travels to the purgatory hotel he wanders through, and a song that calls the dead back home. We can only be talking about the stunning conclusion to THE LEFTOVERS, Season 2. After a brief detour through our own exploration of the songs we would want to sing to reclaim our families, we unpack the powerful season finale, its multiple narrative payoffs and gut-punches, and the devastation doled out to the once miraculous town of Jarden, Texas. We then dissect the much more difficult question this season posed, "Why are we losing?"; and in our hopeful and haunted attempts to be honest about what our faith is really telling us, we explore what it might mean if the answer is, "Because we are supposed to."
This is a conversation you won't want to miss and we hope you enjoy it.

In this penultimate installment of phase two of #inthemourning, we have one of our most surprising and challenging conversations yet as we explore Alejandro Amenabar's haunted chiller, THE OTHERS. After a stopover in Jarden for Season 2, Episode 9, of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS, we confront the complicated conversation that arises when a film is remarkably effective in its craft, but wears its message a bit too openly on its sleeve. What extends from that starting point is a reflection on the ways we respond to information when it is in conflict with the very roots of our beliefs.
This is one of our lengthiest, but also most energetic and heartfelt conversations in a while and we hope you enjoy it.

Time to "tune in" as we continue our journey through phase two of #inthemourning with new discussions about HBO's THE LEFTOVERS Season 2 and a full conversation about the visionary and ground-breaking film by Alex Proyas, DARK CITY.
The conversation this time around explores the complicated efforts we all must make to carry the light in dark spaces, or at the very least learn how to reflect it. We welcome back frequent friend of the FoG Ian Olsen to help us unpack the ever-shifting complexity of this dark landscape we see before us, and begin to see the beauty that just might have been there all along. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Picture us in an orange grove... but first we have to stop by a rustic old rainy motel where the guests are as varied as their birthdays are the same, and some mysterious forces are taking them down one by one. It's James Mangold's IDENTITY on this week's continuation of #inthemourning, exploring Season 2 of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS and films with paradigm-shifting narratives.
We are joined this week once again by foreign correspondent, Vera Goudie wherein, after a brief, habitual stopover in Jarden, Texas for episodes 5 & 6 of THE LEFTOVERS, we dive into the pulpy slasher whodunit from James Mangold and unpack a surprising exploration about the multitude of inner voices we each carry in conflict with each other, and the ways that some pressure-cooker climates can force us, not to reconcile our disparate thoughts, but to begin dropping our vital inner contrasts one by one.
It's a fascinating and fun conversation this week and we hope you enjoy it!

We take a notably more light-hearted approach to this week's film in our installment of #inthemourning as we examine yet another paradigm-shifting narrative: this time in the form of Sir Kenneth Branagh's Hitchcockian thriller DEAD AGAIN. After our usual stop through Jarden, Texas and episodes 3 & 4 of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS, we have a delightful time discussing this disarmingly romantic and surprisingly effective early 90s thriller about past lives, unsolved mysteries, and a few surprises neither of us saw coming in our first time viewing it.
The film also acts as a kind of litmus test for what you might choose to focus on in its thematic interests. Are you a wounded cynic, seeing the ways in which opportunists keep conflicts stoked to benefit themselves? Or are you a hopeful romantic, noticing the ways that love defies the boundaries of time and eternity to right wrongs and bring about justice? Either way, it's all right here in a laugh-fueled, brisk conversation about Sir Kenneth Branagh's DEAD AGAIN.

It's time once again to let the mystery be, everyone. We're diving back in on our sequence of episodes covering the HBO series THE LEFTOVERS called #inthemourning, and as we begin our journey through Season 2, we're looking at a handful of films that deal with paradigm-shifting revelations.
Our first stop -- after a detour through Jarden, Texas with our gang in The Leftovers -- finds us tackling the legendary Martin Scorsese's only film that could be classified as a horror thriller. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a US Marshal sent to the remote Shutter Island to investigate a missing person from a psychiatric facility, but the conspiracies he uncovers there lead to one of the most harrowing personal revelations of his lifetime, and an opportunity for us to discuss the ways in which we think about ourselves and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.
Welcome to phase two of #inthemourning. We hope you enjoy it.

BOOK CLUB! We inaugurate our first official Fear of God Book Club with a lengthy and insightful conversation with new friend of the show, bestselling author Matt Ruff. We get to know Matt a bit -- his history with the horror genre and what he's been watching lately -- before doing a deep dive into a discussion on his outstanding book, LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, soon to be airing as an HBO series produced by Jordan Peele.
Structured as a kind of "binge-able reading experience", Matt's inventive novel features interconnected stories about a black family in the 1950s who wrestle daily to survive in Jim Crow America, but also struggle against monsters, ghosts, curses, and a kaleidoscope of other weird and paranormal events. We discuss some of the finer details of Ruff's inspiration for his unique and imaginative book, as well as the broader considerations about people whose motivations, histories, and choices are far more complex and interesting than we often regard them to be.
This is a really fun and fascinating conversation, one we're certain you're going to enjoy. So kick back, buckle up, and take a ride with us and author Matt Ruff as we traverse LOVECRAFT COUNTRY.
