Finishing our brief intermission from our lengthy series #inthemourning this week with another installment of #20/20/2020, covering your top ten favorite horror films of 2010! This week's edition has your countdown of listener voted favorites from that year and an extended conversation about Darren Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN. There is some fascinating conversation that arises as we explore the complexities of obsession and identity and the painful difficulty between assuming a role and becoming our true selves. It's a really compelling discussion this week and we hope you enjoy it.

No, this is not, in fact, our year-in-review for 2020. It IS, however, a return to your favorite horror films of each of the last twenty years with a countdown of your top ten from 2009 and a full discussion about Sam Raimi's absolutely bananas fright fest, DRAG ME TO HELL. Nathan and Reed land on opposite sides of the fence in determining the merit and effectiveness of this zany descent into the bowels of hell, but still manage to agree on the potential value a film like this can serve to give ourselves an outlet to properly manage the power and impact of each of our individual choices. This is a fun and relatively brisk conversation that we hope you'll enjoy.

Let's be in it, then. We wrap up this first phase of our new kind of series, #inthemourning and its examination of Season 1 of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS with a conversation about remembering, truth-telling, and the long process it takes to come to a place where you can speak honestly and in awareness of yourself knowing yourself.
This week's opening, in light of recent events, is a bit different and reflects our hearts and minds and spirits in this season. We welcome you to the conversation and hope you enjoy it.

Don't let the PG-13 rating fool you. Today's film is absolutely terrifying.
We round the corner for the home stretch on this phase of #inthemourning and its sub-series #remnant with our penultimate episode on one of the very, very few Persian horror films: UNDER THE SHADOW. We also take one brief detour into episodes 7 and 8 or HBO's THE LEFTOVERS Season 1 before wrestling down the nightmarish vision of a mother and her daughter terrorized by a malevolent spirit in 1980s war-torn Tehran. It's a powerfully affecting film which yields some propulsive discussion around what it might mean for us to haunt the land where we live rather than it haunting us.
it's an exciting and very fun conversation this week and we hope you enjoy it.

We continue with our series #inthemourning, examining loss and cataclysm, and its smaller mini-series, #remnant by having a conversation about episodes 5 & 6 of season 1 of the HBO series THE LEFTOVERS and an extended conversation about David Koepp's adaptation of Richard Matheson's STIR OF ECHOES. We welcome new friend of the show Noel T. Manning II to discuss the 1999 thriller which in its time was heavily overshadowed by the earlier released The Sixth Sense, but has earned a decent following in the years afterward for its strong lead performance by Kevin Bacon, its effective set pieces and effects, and its resonant themes of modern suburbia and the desperation to be more than "ordinary". We explore all of that and more on this week's episode and we hope you enjoy it.

If you've been following our social media feeds, you may have seen where Nathan and Reed were recently invited to an episode of Meet Me at the Movies on C19TV and WGWG.org, hosted by Noel T. Manning II. There are a lot of laughs as they recount in brief the history of the show and the community it has developed as well as selecting the horror movie characters with whom they would choose to be quarantined. The audio of that episode is presented here with gracious permission from the owner. Enjoy!

We continue on our trek through Season 1 of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS and films which intersect thematically with what it has to offer, specifically ghost stories and hauntings.
Our next stop, after reviewing episodes 3 & 4 of THE LEFTOVERS, we invite friend of the show Bill Oberst Jr. back to have a full conversation about Peter Medak's film starring George C. Scott, THE CHANGELING. A classically structured haunted house story, THE CHANGELING quickly yields its narrative to a long hidden mystery, which threatens to undermine an entire empire and reveal some remarkable things about the ways we ourselves reflect on our own personal and national histories. It's a fun and thought-provoking conversation we think you won't want to miss.

After a surprise prologue last week -- check out the bonus episode on Marvel's The Avengers - Infinity War -- we launch into a new, timely series covering conversations about HBO's TV series THE LEFTOVERS and focusing on films adjacent to its many themes.
Our first stop is David Lowery's powerfully affecting film, A GHOST STORY, which is as sparse and patient as it is haunting and beautiful. The film evokes questions about time, space, existence, meaning, and the powerful bonds we can feel when we engage with our own presence in the here and now. It's one of our most honest and vulnerable conversations yet and we hope you enjoy it.

"And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's Mightiest Heroes found themselves united against a common threat" ... and they lost.
With this episode, The Fear of God covers the MCU for the first time in the most Fear of God way possible: as an examination of loss, death, grief, and sorrow.
Intentionally selected at a moment of, as Richard Rohr calls it, "global initiation", this special episode features frequent Friend of the FoG, Ian Olson, as well as a robust and lively conversation about the greatness of the MCU, and dovetails into a somber and sober reflection on lament and loss and all that "isn't fair" about all that isn't fair.
Assemble with us. Lament with us. For Thanos is coming. And he is inevitable.

-Another Name for Everything episode: Our Global Initiation Part One
-The five essential messages of initiation are (taken from the above):
1) Life is hard.
2) You are not that important.
3) Your life is not about you.
4) You are not in control.
5) You are going to die.

Well hi there... It's time to go back down the long, winding road that is another installment of our Quarterly Kings, where we invite our friends into an extended conversation around one of the works of Stephen King: this time his long-deferred sequel to The Shining: DOCTOR SLEEP. We take a look specifically at the masterful and haunting adaptation by Mike Flanagan -- both the theatrical and director's cut -- and have a discussion around those hungry, dark things that eat what shines. So buckle up ladies and gentlemen. We've assembled our own True Knot and are headed back to the Overlook Hotel. Won't you join us?
