The only way God could reconcile Himself to us was to sacrifice His rights as King. What entitlements are you holding on to?

What have we learned from this difficult year that is still difficult? On the eve of Thanksgiving, let’s turn our hearts toward gratitude and to the One in whom we can always rejoice.

Jesus offered religious people a mysterious sign—the sign of Jonah. Jonah went outside the city to witness its condemnation, but Jesus went outside the city to die for its salvation. Jesus is the better Jonah, and if we see it clearly, won’t we repent even more than Nineveh?

The book of Jonah ends with a cliffhanger question. God seems to ask it of Jonah, but it’s actually a question directly to us. Will we surrender our self-righteousness before our just and loving God?

Jonah’s sin caused his deep dive into the sea. But, even in the depth of his sin, he discovered God’s grace. Even though Jonah’s humility is short-lived, it shows the extent of God’s grace.

The prophetic book of Jonah is unique. It’s not about a prophet’s words, but about the prophet himself. It is a strange story that demonstrates how much God loves our enemies and begs us to ask the question: are we cool with that? In so doing, we must also confront our sin and find God’s mercy in it.
