The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Podcast Discussing Michigan State Basketball.

June 8, 2023: We continue our summer off-season discussions about the Spartans and Big Ten as Rod gives us his rankings of Big Ten coaches. You might be surprised with the order although there's a very good chance that you can guess who tops the list of Big Ten coaches. In fact, Rod argues that the gap between 1 and 2 is bigger than 2 and the rest of the field as Izzo is the top coach by every metric.

Are you looking for Spartan gear? There’s only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show.

If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. Sometimes, those gutters also can’t keep up with the rain or leave puddles by your foundation.

If you live in the Grand Rapids area (Muskegon to Saugatuck to Rockford to Lowell) contact Kurt Stauffer at the Brothers that Just Do Gutters. (https://www.brothersgutters.com/grand-rapids-mi/).

If you’re anywhere in the metro Detroit area the Brothers have you covered too! (https://www.brothersgutters.com/metro-detroit-mi/). They are real professionals who will clean, repair, or replace your gutters and protect your home quickly and efficiently with friendly service.

Mention Final Four to get 10% off your gutter work.

May 31, 2023: On the cusp of the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft and maintain your eligibility, MSU guards Jaden Akins and AJ Hoggard both announced they will return for the 2023-24 MSU Spartans season. Their return brings a lot of experience, talent, production, and potential upside assuming Akins plays the entire year without injury. Coupling their return with Hall and Walker taking their COVID years and a top 6 recruiting class, and Michigan State is set for very successful year.

The biggest questions with the return of the two players is how are the minutes going to get delegated? We are unlikely to see 35+ minutes from any of the starters as we did last year. Also, it seems to go without mention that it should look like a more typical MSU team with a faster pace and a reemphasis towards running and rebounding. At this way too early to know time of the preseason it is reasonable to think just about anything is on the table for expectations with this team.

May 20, 2023: We're thrilled to welcome Jay Bilas (https://www.twitter.com/JayBilas) from ESPN onto the show where we covered a ton of topics on college basketball. Jay is one of the most recognizable analysts and colormen in the college game for decades. The best thing about Bilas is that he is more than happy to state his opinions on the game and the overall landscape of the game.

We spoke about the impact of NIL and whether contracting and employment was really on the horizon for the college athletes. Also, we discussed the impact of officiating and where the correct emphasis should be with employing officials and how to call a charge. Jay explained what has made Tom Izzo so successful at MSU. Finally, Bilas threw some shade on all the Michiganders for being a little too wimpy with the cold.

May 10, 2023: Eric and Rod got a chance to sit down with long time reporter, Michael DeCourcy, of The Sporting News. We discussed MSU's title chances both in the Big Ten and nationally and the overall success (or lack thereof) for the conference in the NCAA Tournament.

DeCourcy also spent some time explaining why he thinks NIL has on balance made the product on the court better for the college game and how he does not believe that we will see a breakup of the NCAA any time soon. Finally, in the rapid fire questions at the end he picked out his overall best college basketball players, best team to never win it all, and best Spartan not named Magic.

May 3, 2023: MSU assistant coach Thomas Kelly joins us again this time to recap last year and gives a little insight into what is coming for next year. We discuss what it's like to have a stable roster versus what he used to deal with at Western Michigan where summer was spent finding players in the transfer portal instead of preparing for the next season. Also, we ask coach Kelly what was harder, playing in the NCAA tournament or coaching?

April 27, 2023: Unsurprisingly, Jaden Akins declared his intention to enter the NBA draft for evaluation while maintaining his college eligibility. After Akin (probably) didn't enter the transfer portal, it was expected by most that he would look to see what his draft prospects were in the NBA. Also, Tom Izzo mentioned at a press conference a few weeks ago that he wouldn't be surprised either if Akins and Hoggard chose this path for evaluation by pro scouts.

Hoggard's entrance into the evaluation process involved much less fan fare as he didn't even post about it until the list came out two days later. After the discovery by the media, Hoggard posted on social media his intentions of entering the evaluation for the draft but few expect that he will be projected as a first or second round draft pick and will almost certainly return to MSU for his senior season.

Rod also discussed in the episode his impressions on the opening of the 2023 AAU season and who MSU seems to be targeting for 2024 and 2025 high school recruits. Of interest is that the commitment of Jesse McCulloch does not seem to have altered MSU's plans on looking at more players at the 4 position for the 2024 class.

April 20, 2023: As had been rumored for weeks now, 6'9" 4 star power forward, Jesse McCulloch, from Cleveland, OH committed to MSU as their second 2024 recruit. McCulloch joins Kur Teng who committed to MSU a few weeks ago to add a second top 100 recruit to what looks to be another good high school recruiting class.

McCulloch's game is one where they expect him to play on the post but also stretch the floor. He needs to add some strength to compete in the Big Ten but he has an entire summer and senior year in high school to work on his body. The next interesting things to watch where will Izzo and the staff want to put their priorities for upcoming recruiting targets.

April 19, 2023: It’s unofficial roster season in college basketball as the transfer portal is wide open as are the pockets of a lot of boosters. Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) money is flowing in ways not anticipated and there are definite winners and losers in the new system. The biggest losers appear to be incoming freshmen and the schools who haven’t figured out how to do NIL or have small alumni/booster bases.

In this episode, Rod and Eric discuss NIL and its impact at MSU and the ever changing rosters of Big Ten teams the circus in Ann Arbor to the machinations in Madison.
